What OS do you use? If it's a 32 bit OS it is not worth it as 32 bit OS's only utilize 3-3.5GB's of ram.

64 bit is a different story, it can utilize up to 128GB's I believe it is. I would think if you play high demand games the additional ram would be of benefit. If all you play is TF2 or the likes, than 3 should be more than enough.

yea i use 64 bit and i do play games like tf2, but i'd also like to play games like bioshock

To be honest, I don't really think you need that much RAM, unless you run lots of high demanding programs at the same time. That's just me though.

If these are the most demanding games you play 3 GB's of ram is more than enough. Almost no games take over 2GB's of ram so unless you run a lot of background app's 3 is just fine and will continue to be just fine for awhile to come.

If you want to spend the money tho more ram will never hurt, just may not help much in this case.

You will notice a slight performance increase in games going from 3 to 6. You will likely be able to disable page filing as well, so that's always a plus. Personally, I would never run 64 Bit Vista on less than 4 GB's. If you ever decide to use Photoshop or a video editor(I assume you don't now because you didn't mention it), that extra 3GB's will go a LONG way. Go ahead and give that i7 another 3GB's of RAM, while it's on sale.

You'll never actually need more than 4gb of RAM. Games will never require you to have more than 2 unless you want to be running a bunch of things with them, ie, firefox, vent, fraps, etc.

This, at least for the next few years or as long as it finally takes gaming companies to make the move to 64 bit (wouldn't hold my breathe).

to clarify, it would give me a total of 9gb of RAM, which is probably way too much (3 right now + 6)

I think 9 GB is enough to run a server. :P Unless you're running a server, I don't think it's really that necessary.

Eh, its debatable. If your using a lot of programs at once, then I suggest it, but its not entirely necessary. I can have CS:S, Chrome, Pidgin, Zune, Photoshop, and Steam running at the same time with only 4 gigs, so 9 is overkill.
