Steady Sniper Aim

Whenever I'm sniper, I want to try to have a steady aim like other players as well to get decent head shots. I do get head shots but that is when people are far away from me. I'm having problems when they come near me and that I panic on the shots. Does anybody have any tips or a way to focus and calm down, while having a steady aim upon the guy rushing towards you?:confused1:

As far as having steady aim while zoomed in and they are close, I can't even do that.

My advice to you for close ranged attackers is to Jarate them first, this will cause them to either run away or panic themselves. Once you got the Jarate on them, rush them with your Kukri (Unless its a pyro in that case just run)

Practice, soon you'll be able to headshot scouts at close range from reaction alone.

I'll write some tips for this after work today. It's not very hard once you know some secrets :P (see my HLstatsX pic below)

Corollary: Does crouching while using the scope help steady your aim?

Tips:

  1. Don't Panic
  2. When they're closer, their heads are bigger targets
  3. At most, try to scope them once when they get in close
  4. Practice no-scope headshots or switch to kukri
  5. Jarate + no-scoped body shots hurt

The main point is if they're close enough, don't try to scope them. If they get within 10 feet of me, I usually kukri them. The kukri crits around half the time it seems.

It is always pinpoint accurate no matter what. You can spin around madly while jumping or do anything else, it won't change the accuracy. There is nothing as accurate as the Sniper's sniper rifle. :)

When I have played FPS games on most of my friends PCs I find that their sensitivity is waaay too high for me.

I'm not the best sniper in the world but I know there are few people on our Dustbowl server (where I always play) who hate me when I'm a sniper and go spy just to back stab me.

My sensitivity is at 1.5 and I might suggest if yours is much higher trying to lower it.

This lessens the the effect of "snap and shoot" when you get startled.

It will take more effort to move your mouse obviously but for me, and it of course comes down to personal preference, I am much more accurate with it lower. Provides much more feel, accuracy, and there is no denying it gives you WAY more control which is a very important of shooting, not just sniping!

I would not suggest jumping from an 8 to 1.5 either. Trying going in increments of 1. If you simply can't stand it... no worries, don't bother. Like I said before, it's personal preference but give it a chance!

I played CS, CS:S, TFC, and many other shooters and when I lowered my sensitivity I became better at every aspect of the aiming/shooting game because of it.

You can also adjust the sensitivity of both scoped & unscoped views in a config file I think. I believe I did that a looong time ago, but I may be thinking of CS. Sorry I don't know the exact file or location, but someone may be able to point that out.

adjust the sensitivity to your mouse and always keep an eye around you to see opposing enemies it helps alot

OK first, get some candles, panicking is easily treated with aromatherapy!
jk jk, you just have to learn how to pace yourself. It's things like this that I love about TF2, it makes you really think about what you're going to do next. sometimes some things in RL can help you with stuff like this. I've found that musical performances has really helped me stay calm, cool, and composed when something bad is happening. Just concentrate on what you're doing and you'll be fine :)

sounds weird but, i find if im moving sideways while aiming i can gets shots off pretty well

mouse sensitivity is the biggest thing

but in terms of not panicking, just figure that the worse that could happen is you die, its way more rewarding to headshot someone in close range than to charge them with melee (eventhough thats awesome too)

Its becoming harder and harder now that more scouts are using FAN in all its overpoweredness

You raise a very interesting point and I am EXACTLY the same way.

I equate it to a goalie in hockey who hasn't had any shots in a game and when he finally gets one he lets in a weak goal.

It's like keeping yourself warmed up and prepared for what's to come instead of sitting stagnant and letting the opportunity of that glorious head shot pass you by.

I never stand still when I snipe and when I do it is for a short period of time in anticipation for someone to shoot - not for no reason.

I stay in the same general area but I strafe left for 2-3 seconds and then back right.

Here's a quick YouTube vid I found if you're at all interested in practicing any of this stuff:

I came from CS so the quick scope when they are up close into there head thing is pretty easy since I used the scout all the time, but you just have to get them before they can start putting bullets into you and messing up your aim. You can pretty much take out any target close range, I don't know how to fix your panicing..other then just try not to.

Some of the best close range sniping ive seen http://pldx.com/movie/6/Auto-aim/

Don't worry about panicking a good sniper wouldn't be alive without it.Just put the panic to good use such as strafing and jumping and it'll be too busy to mess with your aim. Although actually being able to headshot people at close range is very hard and improbable to get down in a short amount of time.

It all depends on how well you can aim without being zoomed in first.Set up the shot before hand so you can instantly zoom in and have the dot on their head.

I pretty much solely play sniper (back when we still had warpath, sigh), and one of the first things I found necessary to do was to decrease the mouse sensitivity. Other people here definitely have the right idea about that. Generally, if you want to snipe, try to keep it somewhere low (I personally use 1.8), but really, do whatever feels right to you after some practice with it.

My second piece of advice regarding close range sniping is this:

Oftentimes when an enemy is rushing you (a pyro for example) and they see that you're zoomed in, they'll instinctively serpentine (i.e. running forward while swerving right and left). Basically, such a back and forth tactic makes their movements extremely predictable. If you center your crosshair and build the charge, you can easily catch them as they move to the other side. Basically, let them run into your crosshair for you. That being said, this works best on classes like the pyro, engi, or medic, who lack a powerful long-range alternative.

For more long range classes like soldier or demo, I find that when they charge me at close range, they don't necessarily serpentine (demos sometimes do) but rather jump up and down and fire as they approach you. Again, this attempt at dodging is also extremely predictable, allowing you to catch them as they bob up and down (while you yourself need to be strafing left and right to avoid incoming shots).

Regarding the scout, I honestly have some of the easiest time headshotting them as they charge me. Basically, the scout moves so quickly and so much, that nearly half the time they jump into the shot themselves. The other half, I generally catch them as they reach the slow point on their descending arc from their double jump.

So basically, my best piece of advice for you is to understand enemy movement and predictability. Everyone thinks that their being unique when they charge you and try to dodge. Truth is though, they're making it quite easy.

Good advices guys, I'll try them out right now. Also Thanks for helping me :D, I hope i can help u guys sometimes too.
