Memory gone weird

Had to format my external hard drive and now I have only 10% of its max capacity available to save on...
It used to be 465GB
Now it has gone down, to a pathetic, 43GB
Any help and advice would be great.

First off, don't call it your memory. That refers to the amount of RAM your computer has.

Second, do you have XP and did you reformat it as FAT32 or NTFS?


The NTFS reformatting of Maxtor HDs is very problematic. But if you reformat it as FAT32 and keep it that way then it'll suck performance-wise. Sometimes, it will reformat correctly if you reformat as FAT32 then reformat again as NTFS.

If you're using Vista or have already formatted it as FAT32, then check if you've partitioned it correctly. It may be you set a 43GB partition and only formatted that portion of the drive.


Also, why did you need to reformat it?

First off, don't tell me what to call it.
It takes up memory...
I know what RAM is I'm not a moron...
I don't know why it needed formatting
Now my windows isn't detecting it...
I think it has broken to be honest...
I'll re-format it to see if that works... not holding out much hope

Well to be honest man, memory is after referred to as your physical RAM inside of your computer. This at the most would be called "external storage". Also if you had to reformat, then once you did that you obviously caused it to act this way.

Also you say you lost photos and songs and things yet you reformatted the drive, seems pretty trollish to me. Maxtor is actually a great company you just happen to mess up a product you bought by tampering with the data with it and the format the disk is on.

TL;DR: It's your fault, external HDD = external storage not memory.
