Hey guys, i've noticed this mostly from playing in the Payload server, the teams are REALLY stacked quite often. :thumbdown:This usually is the result of people wanting to be on the winning team, and therefore join up with the good guys. The problem is when a lot of the good guys want to play together, which leaves the new players and the less competitive players to get destroyed on the other team. I understand we're all about fun and you might really want to be on the same team as a friend, but it's no fun for people on the team that's getting anhialated right as it gets out of spawn. Now I'm sure that this is common on other TF2 servers as well, but i mostly see it on payload. I auto-assign my team every time...so this usually result in me getting my butt kicked by some super stacked team. Now, it's not ALL the time, but it happens regularly. My recommendation is to make some sort of mod or just make it so that you can ONLY either Auto-Assign to a team, or join Spectator. This would at least minimize the ability for teams to get super stacked. I understand there's auto-balance and stuff, but this would make it fair from the start for the most part. Please vote in the poll and let me know what you think.

EDIT*: PLEASE POST IF YOU VOTE! I WANT TO SEE A REASON FOR YOUR VOTE!

I totally agree with you:

The payload server seems to have, by far, the biggest problem with team stacking.

first of all what poll? Second of all it wont happen lol.

sorry while it IS a great idea, it would make our servers less popular.

As for my opinion, auto-balance doesn't work. it just moves the person with the least points and you still end up with unbalanced teams.

as much as I like wearing the color read all the time, I think auto-assign on all servers would be the way to go. along with a better balancing system.

For one thing, what if there are only 2 admins, you need 1 on each side, and they might get put on the same side. Besides, people like to play with their friends. Yes team-stacking is a problem, but it can usually be managed, and its not as bad in my opinion.

Admins can still switch themselves from team to team... the problem is there's not only admins in the servers

I see games without admins on one side quite alot. or is that a payload only rule?

actually now that i think about it, ya? Why would u need an admin on either side? Worst case, either they can whisper to another =(e)= member on the team of the problem if the admin's not. Some cases like Mic spamming, Press ESCAPE--->Player List----> Must Players

Or the admin could go spectator and hear and see everything

Dustbowl has this problem too, but auto-assign isn't the way to fix this.. it prevents people from joining to play with their friends and we would lose a lot of regulars if we did this.

Team stacking is just a part of online gaming, I usually try and help out the losing team most of the time. Auto-assign only might not even help, maybe the auto-assign puts a ton of great players on one side, what happens then.. no one can swap over to help the other team.

All servers I believe should have it. Wasn't exactly sure how to vote on this but I wanted to pick something I thought a little more strongly about.

Pros: Gives either teams a chance which can make for a more exciting game. Gives inexperienced players a chance to play along side some of the better players (kind of like a teaching thing to them to watch the masters at work).

Cons: Some people like to play with certain people or groups of people on one team. Even though it would do auto assign, there isn't a sure way that it's going to be even. Some of the better players may still be stacked on one side on accident.

Here's my two cents:

When I jump in to play a game, I pick the team with the least number of people on it. Technically this is exactly what Auto Assign would do anyway.

But I would resent it if my freedom to choose sides was taken away. What if it's 15-15, and my friend is playing on Blu? I have a 50/50 chance of getting on the "wrong" team, and in that case, it doesn't matter.

Let me also bring up another argument. It's the "If you criminalize guns, only criminals will have guns" argument. While I see very little actual team stacking, I way too often see people jumping to Spec at the last second and attempting to switch teams to get on the winning team just before fate decides the outcome. I promise, if Enforced Auto Assign was enacted, we'd suffer through tons of people jumping into Spec and out, playing the crapshoot until they got on the team they wanted to anyway. The stackers will still stack, with the downshot that they now have to be more annoying to do so.

Many times, on Turbine, I get stuck with a team that forgets that it's CTF, and that the other team is going to try to cap OUR flag. They're out in 15 different skirmishes, but nobody is protecting the flag, and we lose, again and again. When this happens, I don't sneak into the console and attempt to scramble teams, or whine about friends picking each other on the other team. I try to rally the troops. I switch to classes I really dislike playing to plug holes in the team. I call for friends to join me on my team to get things rolling. I do things I can control; I don't demand that everyone else lose THEIR control :D

As for "Admin on every team," yeah, sometimes admins aren't as equally spread as we desire. But forcing a random element would just make things more difficult. If I want to switch to RED to balance the admins, I don't want to have to roll the dice in Spec to get on the right team. I don't want to have to pull admin shenanigans to get there. And because eGO admins are here to play first and admin second, I don't want to police Spec because the other team doesn't have any admins and I can't Roll the right number to get on their team.

I think that forcing Auto Assign would have these effects:

1) People who like playing with friends will leave for less Totalitarian servers.
2) Teams will still end up stacked, due to the relative nature of awesome players to noobs.
3) The chance of admins being on teams, and not being on teams will be the same.
4) Every round, at least one person will whine loudly over chat about being separated from their friends.

In other words, it's a plan that looks good in theory, but I'm willing to bet that in practice it's a lose-lose all around the table.

For one thing, what if there are only 2 admins, you need 1 on each side

I have heard this so much that I can't take it anymore.
I know it isn't technically against the rules of eGO to refuse to switch sides it's just common courtesy! I am SICK of asking an admin on the other team to switch and he/she says no because they need an admin on the other team.
We're not dealing with 5-year-old kids that need to be watched every second of every day. These are people mostly in their late teens to 20s even 30s and 40s, they're mature enough to hold themselves in a public environment. I do understand the issue of "punks" in our servers, but if there is a punk mic-spamming or something of the sort, we have other players on the other team that want to have fun too, they'll complain and we (admins) will take care of it. A few times I've even seen the pubs warn the other pubs about the language, and e's are gunning to warn people, if there is a small issue any one of the e's will tell a G or an O in that server about the problem, and we can deal with it in a timely manner.

To me, eGO is about having fun and making it fun for EVERYONE. It is rather hard to have fun when you're getting rolled so fast you can't even re-spawn.

I only call for admins to switch teams when I really think that people on my team aren't having fun, and when an admin pulls out the "But we need an admin on both teams" I get so frustrated that I don't even talk to anyone for the next five minutes.

This might seem like a bit much over a small issue but, and idk if this is just me, to be in eGO means to care about the experience of other people, and when I see a person in eGO refuse to help a team out, I question whether he/she should be in eGO.

that went on for a bit longer than I meant it to, sorry :\ Just felt that it was an issue that needed to be named.
Thanks for reading

autoassign is not the way to go, but i WOULD like to maybe see team scramble come back into play under certain circumstances...

I think a simpler way would be a mercy scramble: If a team wins X games in a row, the teams automatically scramble.

Another thing, if you want auto assign only, we have that new Arena server that really needds some help.

NO! Payload maps will tend to be stacked in favour of blu most of the time, that is the nature of the maps. Also, I would hate to join a server to be refused to play with some of my friends.
