Same with Turbine. I asked this too, I do not know why, but look at it like this. What are the maps, off the top of my head: Steel, both Wells, Fastlane, Badlands, Egypt Final, Granary, Turbine, and Gravel Pit. We have Egypt, Turbine and Gravel Pit servers, but that's not a very big or welcoming choice of maps. I say leave em in.
My two cents: As you know, I'm a Turbine nut. Whenever Atten asked me to help fill Valvemaps, I'd make it a condition that he had to support me whenever I RTVed for Turbine.
There's four reasons why I want Turbine to stay a part of the rotation on Valvemaps, even though I'm trying to shove through perfect attendance on Turbine:
FIRSTLY) Turbine is a Valve Map. The theory behind the RTV Valvemaps is that it's full of fans who want to play maps made by Valve, but not any specific one, and not for too long a time. Some people lose taste for a map after playing it too long; fans of Turbine come in all shapes, including those who just like a little bit.
SECONDLY) People learn to love a map by playing it. Interestingly enough, 24/7 can disturb people, scare them away. Many are used to rotation servers. Giving them an option to sample Turbine the "old fashioned way" can only help 24/7 Turbine.
THIRDLY) Some people don't want to play with Turbine nuts. Turbine spies know every hiding place, every route, every good flying-backstab angle. If you want to battle against that level of expertise, come play 24/7. If you are an all-around guy, play rotation. I've found that rotation people are jacks-of-all-trades; they can PWN on Dustbowl, Gravel Pit, AND Turbine, whereas 24/7 nuts are specialists; I can place a sentry where it will do the best damage... but only on Turbine. Everywhere else is still guesses and intuition.
FOURTHLY) I'm getting my wish and Turbine is filling. When it's full, I can go into Valvemaps and RTV Turbine.
Our servers are driven by demand, and apparently there is a large appetite from buffet players who like playing a wide assortment of maps. Artificially reducing their choices just because we have 24/7 maps is bad karma.
I can't remember which uppyup said it, but I once heard "Sure eGO has rotation. It's called 'put all our servers on your favorites.'" In theory that works. When you want to play 2FORT, go play 2FORT. But there's a large group of fans who love playing a sm?rg?sbord of maps with other people who love sm?rg?sbords of maps... they are who Valvemaps is for.
Them... and me, when I can't get Turbine any other way
. Also guys, you don't have to join if you don't want to. Nobody is really forcing you to join,I just want to have a group of friends to play with in the morning of Gravel Pit.:laugh:
