One thing about the tricores, they are actually quad cores with one core locked. Some of them can actually be unlocked and thus become quad cores. I say 'some' because what happens is, when AMD makes a quad sometimes the get chips with one defective core, in this case they lock the core and sell it as a tricore. Though to meet orders they routinely take perfectly good quads and lock a core to sell it as a tri core.

So if you go with a tricore you have a chance that you can unlock a core to make it a quad core.

hope you have a new mobo for that as well, cause your current CPU socket won't match those new guys. i currently have the same problem with my athlon 64 x2 4600+ @ 2.4 ghz. its 939 slot (which basically nothing else is anymore) so you'll need to pick up a new mobo in order to have those spiffy CPUs fit.

I have an AM2 which will work, but it won't be even close as to how efficient an AM3 would be, i'll be upgrading mobo next, then RAM along with it

I would definitely say go for the 3rd one. It's cheap and you can unlock the other 2 cores to make it a quad-core.

that third one looks so amazingly awesome and exactly what i need...however its AM3 slot, does that mean for mobo wise you need to have AM3 and thus DDR3 memory? or is it compatible with AM2+ and DDR2

If i remember correctly, you can put an AM3 into a AM2 socket, but not vice versa. memory wise it just runs better on ddr3 i think

I'd go for the second. Its fast and cheap and you don't have to mess around with unlocking cores. But if you know how to do that stuff yeah go for the third.

Depends if you want to multitask more or game more, if your going to game more get the dual, if your going to multitask get the quad, if you don't know get the triple.

Also if your thinking about unlocking the 4th core on a triple core it only works on certain motherboards and CPU's randomly. And the 4th core isn't that stable, for example if you ran the triple core stock you could run it much faster than with the 4th core on.

True, you don't really need a quad core. If all you're gonna do is play a single game at a time, then take a break, hit up forums, watch some vids on youtube, then go back and game a little bit more... you don't really need a quad unless your gonna burn 4 blue ray dvds and lightscribe em. What matters is the speed. Get a dual core and OC the crap out of it. Barely any programs utilize the 4th core. If you check your cpu usage if you have a quad, you will notice your 4th core will stay idle a large amount of the time.

exactly. and i'd say at least 60% of the people with quads don't do anything on their computer to merit a quad...pretty sad. Dual is plenty and after that its just speed, so get one that can OC easily and safely
