Need a new processer

Well. I just upgrade my computer for the first time. I'm now looking to upgrade it again. I am now looking for a Processor. I have my computer specs. What I need to know is what to look for when buying. Like with a gfx. card are there certain stuff that I am required to have.

To be totally honest.. if you are upgrading the processor of that computer.. don't bother. That motherboard seems to have a very old S939-socket (Socket 939) that does not support any of the modern processors. I seem to recall that you can put a AMD X2 to that socket as well but they are not very powerful and could provide a good bottleneck for any graphics card that you put into that free PCI-E slot.

Just my two cents, there might be something I have missed. In that case, the wiser ones can correct me.

nope you're correct. so in order to upgrade your CPU you'll need to pick up at least an AM2 or AM2+ motherboard. that way you can get a powerful dual core like the 7850 which will then be compatible, and might i suggest a new case because those cases SUCK for air flow. You should be able to get all 3 for a cool $250.

depending what you're doing, i think quad cores are completely pointless, unless you're a graphics designer or something. If you just game and browse the internet quad is a waste of money. Here is a cheap combo that would rock your house down.

JunK that mobo won fit inside his case, he has a mATX case while that is a ATX motherboard.

You'll be better off Clark saving for a new PC, trust me.
I had a PC similar to your current one and I saved for a year from presents and gifts (no job lol) and got parts and put a PC together.

oh, didn't even look at what his case was....hell should get a new case anyway, those cases (have one but heavily modified it for cooling) SUCK at cooling.
you're at a point where to take a baby step, you're forced to long jump.

OP, it's time for a new computer. Not worth putting any money into a new processor for that computer. You are in luck though, as your current computer has some parts you can re-use!

Optical Drive (DVD)

Are all still useable. You will need a new:

Processor
Motherboard
RAM
Case
Power Supply
Video Card

I know this all sounds very very expensive, but just let us know what you currently have to work with, and we'll work some magic for you! There are some great cheap build specialists on these forums that can build you a great rig at most any price.

You are in the exact situation I was in about a year ago clark. Trust me, in the long run if you can wait now or can scrap together some cash, a new rig is a far better solution than upgrading with hardware that old.

It would be different if mid range computers were expensive but they are sooo cheap right now it's just not worth upgrading unless most of your components are already current.

most people are afraid to do it themselves instead buying DELL or ibuypower or wallmart or hp or whatever else...

DONT! you can do it. and probably cheaper on newegg. if you do it yourself it really isn't that hard. read up on it. ibuypower gives you "corsair or VALUE BRAND" which is like genric. don't fall for DELL (like I did a few years ago) either. they are cheap bastards. if your money is really tight, buy from newegg (wait for "sales" emails [register]). AMD is good for gaming CPU, and the i7 IMO cannot be beat!

p.s. DONT SKIMP ON THE POWER SUPPLY! get a NONmodular one with 80mm fan not 120-140mm! google it - they're better.
