How to Demo

Ok guys, so suppose your in game, and you see something spectacular; something either you can't believe like a person taking impossible shots, or having superhuman speed. Or just suppose you want to record how awesome your awesomeness is in Insurgency.

Step 1 Start

First you must have your console enabled. If you do not know how to, refer to the Index below. Now that you have your console open (remember open it with tilde ~) you just type "record <demoname>" (name being whichever name you want to use). Suppose I want to record the =(eG)= vs =(eGO)= scrim then I would do it like this "record match". If it is successful you should see the console type something like this "
Recording to match.dem..." You can use a variety of names that you like. It is up to you, I recommend using unique names for each demo; case being if you record many of them you might not be able to distinguish among them.

Step 2 Stop

Ok now that you have started recording your demo, you just play as normal; and until you are satisfied. When you are done playing or you want to stop recording; you just use this simple command. Open up your console and in it type "stop". This will stop your demo and it will be automatically be saved for you. If you are succesful in stopping your demo, the console should read something similar to "Completed demo, recording time 49.2, game frames 1152." It changes depending on the size of your demo. It also automatically saves in your main insurgency folder. Now to playback your demo...

Step 3 Watch

Once you are done recording and saved it successfully you can watch your demo in the Insurgency game. It is very easy, to watch the demo you just open your console again. And type in console "playdemo <demoname> and it should automatically start playing it for you. Its like a magic charm. Refer below if you want to know how to be able to record movies. Footage should preferable be longer then two minutes."
Be sure to get footage of both first person, and third person, Otherwise it is impossible to tell if the player is leaning or shooting through a wall.

Appendix A

To save in another type of file
Source Recorder is built into the Source Engine.

Record a demo.
record <demoname>
Stop the demo when done.
stopdemo
Then in console use

host_framerate 30
startmovie <moviename>
now play your demo with
playdemo <demoname>
Let this run and when done use
stopmovie
and then
stopdemo

Now, get Virtual Dub or another program. and open movie with setting like this:

There will be a lot of .tga files in your game folder named like this
moviename0001.tga and so on with the numbers. Select the first number and it will load. You can now save the movie, but if you want sound, there will be a sound file with the name moviename.wav
Add this to the movie with and now compile with "save as .avi" from the file menu.

To enable developers console
Go into options in your game. Then press the keyboard option. Then press the advanced button it should be in the bottom. And it has a choice to enable the developers console. You should be set!

What a handy little guide. Just remember, if you are speccing someone you believe is hacking do not let them know. Do not tell anyone in the server except other admins and even then only use private channels like admin chat or vent. You don't want the accused hacker to turn off his hacks because then your demo proves nothing and a hacker just got away scot-free.

Happy movie-making!

Thanks for showing us how to replay a demo with good, detailed instructions!

There's already a thread on how to record a demo, though, but this is still a good thread for playing back demos :)

Thanks slash. It was a question I asked during the division meeting.

ps: we should have record JohnT and Arthius for breaking the website, LOL

Question, does this work on other Source Engines such as HL2,HL2DM,DODS,CSS,TF2?

spawn campin chicken monkeys

This will be great to capture vids of those spawn campin chicken monkeys, thanks!!!!:facewall:

Another way to replay and record your demos are opening the game, press Shift+F2 and load your demo.
Then, play and record it with your screencapture.
