Ok I just recently moved, so I changed my desktop from wireless to manual connection.
After plugging in my cable from the modem into the network card I get a little popup at the bottom right corner saying every 5 mins or so acquiring network address... while it was connected for those 5 mins I can download etc but as soon as it hits 5 minutes I lose connection and have to wait for it to acquire.
Well thats not the way to go.. So I gave my card a static ip address seems to have fixed the problem.
However it seems my connection now runs SLOWER which I dont think is the case, but my laptop on my other computer gets better upload and download speed then my desktop .. what gives?

Are the ethernet cable new or have you used it before? Have you tried using a different ethernet cable. Sometimes there will be an issue w/ the ethernet cable where the connection will have some funky wiring, making the signal between hops either slow down or lose strength. I would suggest testing different ethernet cables just to see what you get.

My modem has a tiny little reset button that you poke with a pencil.
When I'm having internet issues, I press it and then on my desktop, I right click the Internet icon in the bottom right and press 'Diagnose and Repair,'
Fixes my problem right away, not sure if you have the same modem as me though.
If yours has one, I would try doing what I do.

Well call your internet provider and ask them. I would think that either its your cat5 cable or modem. also there could be chance that your modem is no longer lock onto its ip at full speed, you can lose the lock on your connection when changing to a wireless. i have comcast, so i would call them and ask them to send a singal to my modem and see what happens, also they can check to see if the box has been lock on your ip. If not this can cause you to lose connection and speed.
