how to tell flac is flac?

long story: i screwed up transcodeing from flac to mp3 (pesky ipod). and now i have copies everything in flac, but idk which ones are flac and which ones are flac coded from mp3 (lossy to lossless is worthless) i can tell the difference but i dont want to go through 100's of songs doin that.

simply: how do i tell a real flac from lossy to lossless flacwithout listening and comparing

Anyways no way that I know of to the OP aside from listening to them. I had this issue before luckily tho only with a handful of songs.
 
try looking at the bitrate, the ones that went through mp3 may be lower.

or you could just encode them all to mp3 and not worry about it. but why encode out of FLAC which is the greatest audio format ever?
 
Unfortunately the only way would be to judge via the music quality. To save time I would simply re-encode everything overnight!

Jokes aside, he said in his OP that it was an accident. I've accidently encoded mp3's to FLAC while trying to change mp3 to a slightly reduced bitrate. "Stuff" happens.
 
If he was trying to encode from FLAC to MP3; I don't understand how he could have gone from FLAC to MP3 and back to FLAC unintentionally. If anything, he should have gone from FLAC to FLAC by mistake. I don't understand how he could have encoded twice on accident when he was only trying to encode once.

Also was not the point of my post, you 2 made an assumption after what I can guess was not reading his OP. Maybe he selected the input/output files mixed up. Who knows.

He made a mistake and asked a question, you participated by giving a no help whatsoever comment not knowing the how or why it happened in the first place.

Carry on tho.

My suggestion was that maybe he merely encoded from FLAC to FLAC, as encoding twice on accident is rather difficult. Maybe you didn't read my post.

oh btw, for the peeps who what to know how i went flac> mp3 > falc

i tried automating the process with some open source software, and i came back after getting a snack and everything was jacked up. so idk really
 
In future you can always tell a transcode by looking at the spectrals (Adobe audition does this nicely). Transcodes will have a flat(ish) line, while true lossless will peak naturally and vary.

Also, how are you ripping your CDs? Ripping to flac is pointless if you use the wrong settings. When encoding to mp3 use the correct LAME switches too.

I was referring to my second post in this thread; As the post of yours I quoted was also referring to it.

And Slusserjon; I guess that just proves the easiest way to do it is to do it yourself. Shame huh?

Can't believe there was such a simple solution. Glad you got your problem fixed.

okay i figured it out and have everything sorted. but if anyone ever needs to do this and cant sort by modified date download foobar2000, play 30 seconds of a flac song that you know is fo real, then play 30 of another

down at the bottom where it says spectrogram or w.e you should see what froggie is talking about

edit: i think this tread can be locked now, problem solved
