TF2 Frames/Sec UBERDROP

so i just came back from vacation and started playing. A couple of nights ago, my fps on TF2 dropped from a good 8-14 down to 1.24. I can barely play at all and everything is choppy.

I haven't changed a single option, whether it had to do with textures or anything else. By the way keep in mind my machine is horrible already. My motherboard won't even accept a PCIe or an AGP card. The characters' mouths are shut tight, even when they speak. But even though its el crapo, it can at least run TF2 and other games and a reasonable FPS.
 
k thanx. I brought up INS today and the same thing happened. But i noticed that this time it happened whenever multiple people were firing. I do not know whether it has to do with sounds or something else, but it froze up whenever someone fired. But the rest of the time, my FPS were alright.
 
Yeah, when everything goes down like that, your video card can't keep up. Try reinstalling both your chipset and VGA drivers, and if that doesn't work it's time for an upgrade.

I know! Thats terrible.
The universal average "playable" fps is 60. I can't imagine 8-14... I would be doing this, :chair: , to my computer if it started to do that!

I'm no video guy, but I think 28 FPS is still fluid video to the human eye. To me, that's playable. Anything beyond that is where you start to notice it being choppy.
 
People say that, but I can deff "feel" the difference between 28 fps and 40fps. Also TF2 is really heavy on your CPU, what proccesor do you use?
 
I can notice anything below 50 being choppy. It doesn't really affect my game play until it gets below 35 though. I prefer it 50+ though.
 
I just checked my processor. Its not the best, i think. 2.13 GHz.

By the way i wont be able to get any hardware any time soon because we just went on an expensive trip halfway around the world. My dad, who is a computer expert, says it will take a while to pay off the credit cards.

Also, i want to remind you guys that its not happening ALL THE TIME. Infact when playing single player games, im pretty alright with frame rates. Its only when playing multiplayer and multiple people start firing their weapons at the same time.
 
I've played (and still am) TF2 for almost 2 years now at 10-15 FPS. Playing TF2 for that long at the frame rate really finely sharpens your aiming skills.

I can help you out with picking out new PC hardware. From what I'm seeing, it looks like you're gonna need a new motherboard, processor and video card.

There are a few launch commands that will make it run faster. I do much better killing wise with these settings:

-novid
-dxlevel 81 +mat_antialias 0

Pretty much, Novid makes the Valve logo video go away, So it loads TF2 right as you start

And dxLevel Turns the DirectX level to 8. With antialias at 0. Now, You won't get the Amazing graphics that are with DirectX 9, But it still is very playable, and increases the FPS by a TON!

While that would be best, he doesn't have to have all of that. If he wants to squeeze a little more out of the hardware, then just buying a PCI video card would be up his alley. The one I linked to is just one of the higher end cards. They make cheaper ones that will still play TF2 at better frames than you're running right now.

EDIT:
To Bad Dude, that is indeed a good read. I actually learned something tonight, lol. However, I don't think the quality associated with FPS is linear. To me, the lower the frames go, the more I notice, but the higher they get it seems I notice the difference less and less. Just my opinion.

Mmm, instead of buying all this new hardware someone should come up with a surgery you can do to alter your eyes to always see in 100 FPS :)

Really, tf2 has fps drops every update, so im guessing this patch finally put the nail in the coffin for you. The min requirements which was a P4 used to be able to run this game smooth in heavy combat, now if you have a p4 your lucky to get a steady 30 fps.

From what I know of as of lately the either one or both of the 2fort maps(maybe others?) have been getting very laggy(video and voice) on the battlements at peak playing time. I never had this issue before and my comp is more then qualified to play the game and I always play the game in the very minimal graphics.
 
TF2 really eats at your CPU
Single core will NOT be able to handle it... well at a decent rate, anyway
I suppose, if you exit all other programmes and set the priority to high you might be able to get away with it...
Dude, as for a hardware upgrade, do not bother...
If you are single core it is time to buy a new pc.

Ask him to help you clean it.
Remove the cpu and re-apply thermal paste etc.
Clean the GFX card and the PSU fan
The heatsink fan, clean that too.
Cleaning it can breath life into an old PC...

I have a single core processor and average 40 fps on 2fort instant respawn . Goes from 30-70 usually sticks around 40
 
Right now, im am really tight on money.

i'll follow xenophek's advice first and try to get the most out of my compy. I'll also try to clean it up. It's been sittin here for a while.

But if all else fails, i'll just have to advert to buying new equipment or a new comp all together.

I also think the problem has to do more with RAM rather than the actual processor. I've had instances where I've actually burnt thru RAM cards, thus lowering the amount i had altogether.

I'll also try to delete some crap to make room for the paging file. Hopefully that will ease the pressure on my little compy.

If your mobo is burning up ram sticks you definatly have a cooling issue with your MB most likely, and will need to at least replace that, and / or replace / re-seat the NB HSF, or just get a new mobo
