[Two Listen]

wish you good luck with a career in this, are you considering going to a design or art collage for this.

Thanks man. For the record, I use just a regular tablet - pen on tablet, not pen on screen. Those things are upwards of $1000 from what I remember...out of my league so far as that goes. A Wacom Intuos 3 9x12 is what I'm currently using.

So far as college and that type of thing, I haven't done any yet. I attended a college course once for some basic art, but didn't really get much from it. In this field, college will primarily serve as your source of connections - your artistic skills and style will still come from what you're able to learn on your own.

I'm not opposed to college or anything of the sort, I just haven't yet explored everything I can do on my own yet - and would rather not spend the money unless I'm 100% sure of how much and in what ways I'll benefit.

Over the past few days I've gotten picked up by Project X, and will be doing things with that.

I'll try to update with some personal things over the next couple weeks.

I've got some new stuff, but for now I'll just post this up, as it seems to be the most accurate representation of what I've been working on this past week or so. Trying to do a bit more with color (as an example, a good 90% of the image below is done almost entirely in shades of yellow, yet appears more varied), straying from "blacks" as shadows and simple lights/darks of the same color for shading.

I've never used a wacom or any other tablet type thing, but it sounds sweet. Would you recommend any for under $100?

Well that's a bit of a difficult question to answer. I don't know of any real serious tablets for less than $100. You might be able to find some older Intuos 2 or Graphire tablets (from WACOM, widely consider the leader in drawing tablets). But they're out with the Intuos 4 series now, and those will run you probably at least $300. And that's for a small one. The Intuos 3's (which is what I have) will still be at least $200.

There's the WACOM Bamboo tablets, but they're not so much for real serious painting as they are just for the sake of being able to use touch or pen tip for precision. They're the only ones I know of that will be under $100. I think Nancy has had some experience with them, and she did more than I could initially when I first got my Intuos 3. Might shoot her a PM for more info on those.

Though, I will say this: Getting a tablet doesn't really enable you to do a whole lot more than you could before. In fact, when I first got my tablet, for roughly the first year, my skill level went down significantly. If you're used to drawing on paper, it's VERY different with a tablet. Only over the past year or two have I really stepped it up and gotten a feel for it. Though admittedly, now I can do almost as much even just drawing wise with a tablet, as I can with an actual pencil.

Thanks man. I was really happy with how that last one turned out. The head/hair was a bit of a bummer, but the rest of it turned out real nice. I like it especially, because it's the first painting I've ever done without using any lines whatsoever - I didn't draw anything out beforehand or at any point, just grabbed some brushes and decided to have at it.

Now I need to start...clothes. Damn.

After analyzing the last painting of mine a little bit more, I decided I couldn't just leave it alone. I redid the head, because prior to, the head was fail. This marks one of very, very few paintings of any magnitude I've ever actually finished. Kinda feels neat.

Unfortunately, the reality of the art world is that, at the end of the day - nobody really gives a crap about you or your work. Whether you improve or you suck, whether you're talented or you smear snot on paper. Because at the end of every day, there's a whole lot of people with a whole lot of talent. And in the eternal battle to get recognized, nobody gives a damn about anyone else.

What I post here seems amazing, but I post it in an art community and it drops to page 6 in a day without so much as a glance. Or it gets moved from the "finished" section of some forums to the "WIP" section, presumably because they don't think it looks good enough to be finished.

...now I've gone and depressed myself.
