Need Help with Comcast Cable! Moved to Tallahasse FL!

Ok, I moved from Tampa, FL w/ Brighthouse to Comcast in Tallahasse FL. They say i have a 8Mbps d/l rate and it shows pretty good on http://portland.speedtest.comcast.net/speedtest/50M/index.html that speed test. But I've tried multiple d/l sites on Fileplanet and even steam is running slow. It bursts at 800K per sec to start then craps down to a little less than 200k! When i run that link and even DSL reports it says it's good at 19.668 Mbps d/l and 2.78/6 Upload. It really sucks. What do i need to post to find out whats wrong or any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks so much!

Okay, couple of things here. 1 Mbps = 128 KBps. So your 800KBps download speed is actually probably hitting the limit your modem has set for downloads.

The 200KBps download speed is probably because of the server that Steam is connecting you to. It will attempt to connect you to the closest server geographical location wise. But it may not always be the fastest and when you live in a large area chances are there are lots of other people who are downloading at the same time.

And another thing, Comcast has lots of fine print in it's service agreement. The reason your speed tests show up so amazingly high is because of Comcast's "Speed Boost". What they don't tell you is that the "Speed Boost" is only good for the first 10 Megabytes. Which means that after the first 10, it will limit your download speed to whatever service plan you're paying for. By default (unless you call or specify when you're purchasing the service.) your download rate is 6Mbps.

Another thing about Comcast is that your speed will vary depending on how many people in your area are downloading. The connection that you have is shared between everyone. Which means that if everyone around you is downloading files, your internet speed is going to be slower.

Ok yeah that makes sense. Comcast must just suck more than Brighthouse RoadRunner did. I always had a steady 800k no matter what time of day it was on cable. That really blows! Maybe Embarq might be a little better! Thanks Shadow!
