This is just a simple little guide for people getting started with the game. I see a lot of people having trouble adjusting to this game, and I thought a little guide to help with the basics could improve the overall first experience of new players.

Installing the game :

Just download the installer, double click it, wait for it to complete, and then restart Steam. It will be in your games list then.

---- Important first step once in the game ----

Go to options ---> Look at the Keyboard setup. This lists the buttons for certain features. They are somewhat different than what you are used to with almost every Steam game. Example : "Z" is the "use" key. It is usually "e" in the games we get from Valve. Don't be afraid to keep looking at the keys.

Joining a game :

Works just like any other Steam game, refresh the server list, sort by name, add the 2 eGO servers to your favorites, and pick one!

Starting your first couple games :

Ok, this is a little odd. They just have a little box, and you just join a team, or if you don't care which, use the auto-join feature.

Now the tricky part, you select a main class, any of the 3. Then you have to select a player model, which you simply click one of the images, whichever you prefer. I had some trouble remembering to select an image and would get frustrated with why it wasn't starting... kinda felt dumb.

Pick a weapon. Well you have your choices. For most people when you start the best choice is the P90 look-alike or a simple assault rifle. I would say stay away from the auto-pistols and their kind, at least for now. You'll have something in your arsenal that responds as you expect that way. These also, are selected by selecting the image.

Ok, so I have my dude, and gun. What now?

Depending on the map, and there are too many to really go in depth with this guide for the moment, follow the group. You will benefit from this hugely. By following others it makes looking around you less stressful and gives you a heads up when your team is under fire. This game is largely based on multi-squad combat, which you will find out quickly is the sure path to victory. By staying at the back and watching your teammates, you are able to give them supporting fire, as well as easily cover them if they need to pull back. It gives way to strategies we'll discuss a little later.

Aright, that seems simple enough. Hang back and cover my team while I learn the ropes. But how do we win?

To win, you either capture the "Ghost" (looks like the torso and head of a robot from the movie "iRobot") or wipe out the other team. The Ghost is the equivalent of a flag or the intel. The Ghost gives the carrier the ability to see where and how far away there are enemies. He isn't able to do much as far as fight back while he is carrying it, but by telling his team where the enemies are, they can quickly kill off any opposition in the squad's way.

If your team is clearly overpowering the enemy in firefights, or they just don't seem to be winning, overrun them and win by team-death. Don't hang back and try to pick off people. It isn't a very effective team-strategy for this game most of the time. The objectives are clearly marked by large red circles, arrows, and splotches. The enemy carrying the Ghost is marked by a big red circle. Kill him, and fast or you're about to lose.

Try to make sure that the person carrying the Ghost can use his mic, otherwise the ability to tell your team where the enemies are is pretty much gone, then making you a big target with 1 less gun to use on the opposition.

Time for the fun part. The Classes.

Recon
nt_player_jinrai_recon01_tn.jpg

This is the fastest, most specialized class. Players using this set of armor should be either doing recon or trying to flank the enemy to turn their attention. You are able to hold shift and sprint and jump moving forward at an insane pace, leaving every other class in your dust.

They have slightly less Aux power (used to sprint). They compensate for this by being quick, and by having more time in visual camo. This lets them quickly move into position and then stealth in to do some damage or try to ninja the Ghost. Your weapon set is slightly less powerful, and you don't have access to the heaviest of the weapons, and the best.

Your weapons specialize in firing quickly and reloading fast. Use this to take out an enemy quick and get out, or to turn everyone's attention to heavy fire while your team moves in. If you aren't doing these things with the recon, your wasting your time and probably hurting your team by taking away firepower.

Special weapons :

Detpack - This weapon is basically a C4 charge with a remote detonator. It takes a few seconds to rig this and then you toss it a couple feet in front of you. Explosives have a huge blast radius in this game, and are insanely effective if used correctly. Don't try to rush in and set this however, you will get caught setting it almost every time. Use it when the opportunity arises, otherwise just ignore this weapon. It will often get you and or a teammate killed. There is Friendly Fire, and this weapon is the one I see killing 3-4 members of a team at least once a game, usually several times.
Night Vision - Just like it sounds. Shows enemies in dark areas.

Assault
nt_player_nsf_assault01_tn.jpg

Assault is the middle armor class, and usually the most solid choice if you don't know exactly what you're doing. You have limited stealth that takes a while to recharge, and since you're usually under fire, you'll have blood on you that obscures your camo and renders it useless.

You have a large amount of Aux power and can sprint across almost any map to anywhere you choose. This is a huge advantage. This is great for countering recon rushes as well as hunting down Ghost carriers. Your weapon selection includes everything from sniper rifles to auto-pistols and heavy machine guns. You will want to be in the middle of the action, spearheading assaults and laying down a lot of fire. Assault should do exactly that. Run in and hose down the enemy. You can take a decent amount of fire, but don't just stand out in the open and get shot up. Move in teams and cover each other. Don't forget you can lean around corners and fire out, but remember, this makes your head the big target they have to shoot at, and that will kill you fast.

You have a grenade. This is probably my favorite weapon in the game. It works just like the nades in Half Life 2. You can throw it a long way, but if the fuse runs out in the middle of the throw, it does explode. Also, be careful to not throw this into a teammate, you will all die, no questions asked. If this is thrown out of a doorway, or into a room you are almost always going to get a kill, or make for an easy rush. Use them correctly, and you'll be a huge asset to your team. Otherwise, you're going to be a bigger threat than the enemy team.

Eventually you'll get some kills and some experience. This brings new weapons, and hopefully more kills/exp. You'll have your choice of sniper rifles, more powerful SMGs, and insanely powerful (and accurate) Machine Guns. Depending on the map, the MG or Sniper are the best choices. Usually the MG though. I have used it several times to take down 4-5 members of a team at 100-200 yards in just a few seconds. The sniper rifle is perfect for sitting back and taking heads off that peak around corners. This really can be a great way to tilt the odds in your teams favor. Just make sure you don't sit somewhere you'll get flanked and knifed. Also, the thermo-vision is perfect for the sniper rifle. It really outlines targets and makes it easy to see those little heads popping out. So if you like being the spearhead of the operation, and the driving force of the firepower, this is the class for you.

Special Weapons:

Motion-Vision - You only see enemies in motion, but you really, really see them. Make sure you check corners for enemies sitting and waiting. This is probably the least helpful of the special vision, however it is very effective in certain maps and situations.

Support
nt_player_jinrai_support03_tn.jpg

This is exactly what it says. Support. They have the heaviest armor, the most Integrity (health), and that is it. They don't get any special perks to speak of, except the special vision mode. They have a smoke grenade, which can be helpful, but honestly it is just going to force the other team to use their special vision modes, which they probably already are using, or should be. You also have access to the best pistol in the game. A shot to the head from this pistol and your target is either really hurting or dead. It is slow to fire, and requires excellent aim however. You have access to all heavy weapons, try to make good use of them.

You don't have Aux or Stealth. You cannot sprint. What you lack everywhere else, is made up for with health. You can take a real beating and deal out massive damage. Just a few kills and you have access to most of the best weapons in the game. You're role as the support class is to do one of two things. Either stay back and be the supporting fire, laying down cover and being a bullet magnet while your team flanks the enemy. Or you can be the tip of the spear. Walk out and lay down the fire if you have a machine gun. You will take down several enemies if your aim is decent before you go down yourself, which you should expect to as a big slow moving target. Which brings us to the next point. Don't be stagnant. Keep moving, keep the enemy working to stay ahead of or away from you. Throw that smoke, walk through it firing like a madman and let your team flank to the side and move around. By the time you go down they will be behind the baddies letting them have it.

In short, be the titan of the match, take the fire, keep the enemies heads down, and keep the fire off of your weaker teammates. You can also play this in a close quarters map. Just walk down the halls with a shotgun. Enemies will think twice about coming near you. Be the one to deny an area to the enemy. Force them to move into the fire of your teammates. Just watch for grenades and detpacks, they are your biggest threat.

Special Weapons:

Thermal-Vision - This is an amazing asset. You see everything. And you get to keep the team indicators on your team (they do disappear at close range). You should be using this almost all the time. You can see through smoke, pick out enemies from far away, and stealthed enemies are no problem anymore. Use Thermal-Vision- profit.

I'll be updating this thread with more info and map-specific strategies. I hope this was helpful to anyone who needed any help, and maybe even help out some others that just weren't branching out of their comfort zone. Don't be afraid to try new combo's. This is just my view on the classes and I would be happy to talk about any of it with anyone that has some other ideas!

See you all in Tokyo!

I personally love it. I'm definately gonna play the sniper with thermo. This should be made a sticky.

Hey some of this is wrong. Recon has night vision, Assault has Motion Vision and support has Thermal Vision.

I fixed the vision error I wrote in there, and everything else you said I pretty much wrote into the classes... If i'm incorrect in any of what I wrote, feel free to correct me :D

Very helpful and well written my friend. I vote for the sticky as well.

Great post very helpful info for newcomers.
