Going SLI

It all depends upon what games you want to play. If the game doesn't support sli, then there is no point and it is the same as playing with one card. If the game does support it, you should see a nice jump in fps (hopefully).
But, I'm not a professional. I'll let someone else explain why it might be bad or good.

Like b0bfath3r said, only some games support Sli, but most do, and it will only show in some games. An example of this is is dual vs. single gpu's in S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky. They both are about the same (Dual scores .3 more then single). However, in Crysis War head, a 9800 GT scores with 20 fps, and a 9800 GX2 (Dual 9800 GT's, one card) scores 36.
Honestly though, I would wait to upgrade your GPU's. The New Nvidia GPU's have just came out, and they are way more advanced then the 9800 GPU's (Smaller, faster, more efficent), and perform much better.

The best question to ask is how big is your monitor. If your resolution isn't at least 1920x1050 you are just wasting your money. The purpose of SLI is to run your games at high quality on big monitors.
Getting a single card solution such as the Geforce GTX 260 will be slightly faster than a SLI combo. Additionally SLI is not supported in all games which makes the option less and less effective. Simply put buying a single card will be more effective and require less power than a dual card solution.

. i have a 24" monitor. uhh resolution is... 1920x1200.
