major differences in wireless connections?

hey guys im gettin a laptop for college and was wondering if there is a major difference between the 802.11 bgn and the 802.11 bg wireless cards inside of them. thx for any help in advance

802.11 b/g/n is the newest and most stable wireless out right now if I'm correct.

If you are in an area that has access to wireless N, then you will get alot more range, less dead spots, faster speeds, and less dropped connections. If you aren't, then you will notice no difference.

B maxes at about 10 mb/s, G @ 52 mb/s, and N @ over 100 mb/s.

Now if you take into account the signal quality and other factors, count in a 5-20% decrease in speed.

So depending on what you want, choose.

Honestly, unless you're going to be using your laptop to transfer files between computers over wireless or doing a lot of LAN gaming, an N router is overkill for a college dorm room. Save yourself $50 and just get a nice wireless G router. I prefer Linksys myself, but the brand is ultimately up to you.

Also if wireless is provided by your campus, I can almost guarantee they do not have wireless N routers. So really your wireless card shouldn't be a big concern when buying a new laptop. My laptop is capable of wireless N, but I've used it maybe once. 99% of the places I go have only B/G so the extra money I spent upgrading to an N card has been wasted in my opinion.
