When i try to use windows movie maker(i have nothing better sadly) to edit a video (.avi) i get a message like this:

The file video1.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

I do not know what it wants me to install or where i could get this codec.

The K-Lite codec pack pretty much has everything under the sun. You can pick it up here, [ame="http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Mega-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10794603.html"]K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com[/ame]

If it still doesn't work after that, you might try renaming the file extension. That's a trick that works at least in Premiere. Although .AVI files are pretty standard, you can try renaming the extension to .mpg or .mpeg and see if it will take that. (long shot, it's generally used in Premiere for converting DVD movies from .vob to an importable format)

Other than that, Windows Movie Maker is pretty crappy, it may just be a problem with the program. There are a lot of free editors out there, you might even want to try browsing CNET or Download.com for a movie editor.

I do not have DivX installed. When i installed the codec, it continued to have the same problem :( Is there any way to check for an update for the movie maker somehow?

EDIT: It only does this for .avi files
