My mother-in-law is having trouble like so many others with the rise in the cost of living and the failing economy.

She asked me if I could help her make a website so that she could sell jewelry and clothing that she makes. Anyone have any advice on where to start. Here is what I am thinking:
1)Find a domain name for free/low cost?
2)Program or site that would help build the website(I dont' know html or anything)
3)Maybe use paypal?
4)Don't know where else to go from here............

shopping cart type site? or just a email me and we'll haggel type thing?

Don't need a shopping cart. But no haggling prices down either. Maybe just if someone wants to buy they shoot an email saying the items they want and wait for an invoice.

Similar to ebay's buy now and ebay stores. But without the ebay fee's is what we are looking for. Incase it bombs.

so they click 'buy this' they fill out a form with information, and it emails your g-ma all the information to bill, package, and ship?

1 and 1 has a special going right now for e commerce the first 3 months free and then its $9.99 a month after that. I read a review that said it was really easy to get everything set up. It might be worth at at least looking into it.

go with what fragbait says, its overpowered, but it will do exactly what she needs.

There are lots of good hosts out there. You may contact me I can get you a good plan if you are interested.

As far as your mother-in-law's request, there are many kinds of solutions. Shopping cart is not a wise choice because it's too complex in general.

I would suggest to go with something like wordpress plugin. There are a few wordpress plugins that are shopping carts and they are very goods.

Paypal and sandbox (google) is very easy to use. But they do take some time to test it out. In fact, those plugins are written mostly for paypal already. Sandbox is still very new, rarely people use it.

You can contact me because I have been with the open source community for a number of years. But I can't really take the case (paid / unpaid) because I am way too busy with my part time. But I don't mind to discuss with anyone online and help you guys out.

A blog platform is very easy to use and the plugin will just work like automated machines, just take a couple days to test things out and get use to it. There is a good paid store plugin made for WP, it's very good.

Again, I don't make any money. Just trying to help. I don't think making $10, $15 buck is such a big deal. I can earn $500 in just a week with my part time.

HTML is very easy to learn. It's basically a bunch of tags that you use. A great program for building up a website would be Adobe Dreamweaver.

you should check out etsy.com its a website that allows users to set up shops and sell handmade items, it's a great site I buy stuff from there on occasion when I need a unique gift to give or just find something cool for myself.

You could still set up an external webpage to showcase her stuff but this is a great starting place.

Domains are very cheap. Don't try to find a free one, because either you'll have to pay $50.00 after the year (like yahoo), or you'll have a co.cc and no one will take the website seriously.

before you purchase your domain, make sure you find a good webhost. I would say normally PHP+MYSQL web host is good enough. You don't need fancy stuff. I can recommend a couple. Even Bluehost and hostmaster (they are the same company) they have cheap plan. Their plan stated "large quantity" but those are just in the technical aspect. It's a flaw basically. You can use up to 1TB but will you? LOL

Get a host, see what they offer, most host provide registration instantly for both host and domain. They could be done as a bundle and can be done together at a discount. So check it out. Share your finding here. We have many experts here on EGO.

I use this host for my personal sites. Their free version is good if you don't expect much traffic, but they also have a full-on hosting service. I've never tried paying for their hosting, but if the free service is any indication about the company they are... they're legit.

Check it out and see what you think. Could be a low cost way to host the website, especially as simple as it sounds. If you need help with code, let me know. I can write code all day.
