Fawkes is a girl. Well...was

Fawkes, as discovered through "Identifying Specimen" in the terminal attached to his cage and reading the specimen list in a separate terminal, turns out to have started as a Female human. Fawkes is specimen D624 and in the Chief Physician's Terminal, entry 87-34224, it states "After only three days subjects B440, B164, and D624 (our female specimens)..." and continues to explain the deformities making them asexual creatures. This shows why Fawkes appears male and is considered male.

Contrary to a comment about Fawkes' gender made by his voice actor, lead designer Emil Pagliarulo has confirmed "No, Fawkes was absolutely a male. This was a mistake. Wes gave an interview and he was mistaken. Trust me, Fawkes is and was male."

* Confusion sometimes ensues concerning a computer entry about a female occupant of Fawkes's cell, Subject D624. Confusion is caused by the vagueness of the results of the occupant of that cell, whether or not the formerly female occupant mentally degenerated and was terminated like the others. Later entries on the same computer indicate that all test subjects were destroyed after failure, so Fawkes was put in the cell some time afterwards.

Also Darkshade all Super Mutants are genderless, not before the transformation in the FEV pits but after they are.
