Probably John Wayne for the #1 spot (did no one mention him yet? Geez.) Harrison Ford is awesome too (mainly because of his "big" roles, Han and Indy, and then American Graffiti is good). Obviously there are plenty of other good actors, but those 2 stick out as playing awesome characters and playing them well, and John Wayne was apparently pretty cool in real life.

Oh, speaking of awesome in real life Jimmy Stewart was pretty cool, I haven't seen a whole lot of his movies though.
