A friend of mine that knows absolutly nothing about computers got this malware virus called "System Security 2009" that prevents him from doing anything on his computer besides using the internet.

Any cool person have a step by step guide to get this to go away. I have read a few websites and it says download/pay for a program to fix it for you.

Any suggestions?

format!!!!

Alright, so here's what he needs to do. First try the basic clean-up. Download the installers and updates for:

SUPERAntiSpyware
[ame="http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button"]Malwarebytes Anti-Malware[/ame]
CCleaner

While he's downloading those, go here and read this cleaning guide...it's ridiculously good.

The important part of all of this is that he needs to run these scans and cleaning programs in safe mode. If he doesn't do that then most likely parts of the malware or virus are going to stick around.

If his computer is at the point where he can't install any of this stuff, you can try installing them in safe mode. Some will work, some won't. If THAT doesn't work, then you can either...

1. pull the drive, slave it in a clean machine and run all of those cleaners/scanners on the drive

2. format and start from scratch (probably your best option if all of the cleaning options fail)

How do I format and start from scratch?

Put in you Windows Disc and when it shows the disc partitions tell it to format your C partition. Then proceed to install Windows on the C partition which is now empty.

Remember that formatting is going to erase your entire partition, so you're going to lose everything...all programs, all documents, all music and pictures - everything.

So you'll need to back up anything you want to keep first.
