32-bit or 64-bit?

To my knowledge the only advantage of a 64bit OS as of right now is the ability to use 8 gigs of ram.

I disagree. While the primary advantage (for now) might be the fact that 64bit OS can utilize more memory, don't forget about the fact that the OS can move twice as many bits into/out of the registries in a single move.

While that may not seem very important, it really is. As more and more "main stream" software is written to take advantage of that, you will see a big difference. I would LOVE to see one of the major games written specifically for the 64 bit buses.

Only those who plan to install or utilize anything more than 3 gigs of ram in their system would generally use the 64bit OS. 64bit supports 4 gigs and up. I've seen systems running up to 16 gigs of ram in their system. For reason I dont know.

it supports LESS than 4G also :P

I disagree with your over all statement though. I have, more than once, dealt with embedded systems (at work) that are 64bit buses, with MUCH MUCH less than 4G of ram.

You say, well, that's at work. Same thing applies at home. I ran an apache web server from my house for along time. 2G of ram...but I choose to run the 64B version of linux to handle it

yes all current processors support both. Unless your CPU is like idk 5 yrs old or more then it might not?

Wow, how many ram slots do you have?

sorry i understated it a bit it has 8 4gb sticks in it so 32gb

it's not my it's one of the computers i use at work a fairly high end mac pro it only used to have 16 gb of ram but the processor died on the other main setup we use here so i ended up putting the hard drives and the ram from the one that died in it.

My mistake. Didn't clarify that. I guess I meant if you want to utilize more than 3gigs of ram then go with 64bit.

BTW, is OS X 64bit or 32bit?

Fully populating a 128bit storage pool would require more energy than it would require to boil the oceans.

OS X has been 64bit since apple started useing intel processors

32 cannot go beyond 4 gb that's the max 32-bit can support
64 can go beyond that and it is generally faster in performance. gneerally, the proccessor can process twice as much as 32 bit
google it you will learn more
