And honestly, it's not a good thing to do... Yes it does enhance your computer, but your also destroying it at the same time. I hear that a lot of people get quad cores at 2.4 Ghz, and OC it by 600mhz, which is very BAD. Even a quad core at 2.0ghz will run amazing so why over clock the 2.4?
Basically what your doing with Overclocking is your making your processor, RAM, or graphics card run harder then it should and it breaks down much quicker.
 
Aftermarket cooler. It can handle it.

Thats the point.

Even if it does run harder, who cares if it lasts 7 years instead of 8.. most of us gamers that OC are going to replace it in a few years anyway. If you don't OC with a aftermarket cooler whats the point of buying one? I want to get the most out of my system. My OC'D Chip by 25% probably runs cooler than yours does. Heat effects the length more than anything.

The life of a computer not OC can pass over 10 years . Yes OC reduce is life but not as fast as you think. If you got a good air cooling , you shouldt be worried about OC.
 
it fine as long as you got good cooling and only has a small affect on the parts lifecycle.

people who over clock are generally doing it on higher end parts which are able to run much faster than stock and still be perfectly stable.

most people who overclock just see the possibility of frying something as acceptable risk.
 
Over clocking anything in your computer is fine as long as you know how hard you can push it, how hot it gets and what youre doing.

Im pushing my 2.67Ghz Core i7 to 3.6Ghz. I just bought an aftermarket cool mainly cause where Ill be moving to its hotter than where I live now.

I did my research, and my i7 could hit 4.0Ghz, but 3.6 is fine for me. Plus Ill upgrade in a year or two to something such as 8 Cores or what ever they have.
 
the life expectancty when OC'd still surpasses the time to obsolescence.

Sure, a ten year CPU will last four years, but most gamers have already replaced their CPU from 2005.

I'll overclock if I want to, thanks. I know what I'm doing. Any decent overclocker probably has 10 fold your knowledge of computers when it comes to hardware, no offense.
 
OC is safe as long as you have an aftermarket cooler that keeps your temperatures within range. I am pushing my Q6600 to 3.7 from 2.4

Overclocking your CPU does not push your GPU faster.....Overclocking your GPU pushes your GPU faster as well as overclocking you ram. I've overclocked pretty much my CPU GPU and Ram. It is safe if you know what you are doing.
 
I have my 2.66GHz i7 920 at 3.8GHz xD But then again I do have a Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 cooler. Overclocking is all about cooling dude. If you have the right kind of cooling and you know what you are doing you will be just fine. Don't go around saying overclocking in general is bad. Its not. If you want to tell someone its bad, it would be these guys: http://www.overclock.net/ :P (I am a part of this community as well)
 
I'm with Chem!st on this one. I plan on upgrading every two years or so, so it's not a big deal if I shorten the lifespan. Besides, if you run a application that doesn't use all four of your cores, then you have a really slow processor. On a game that only uses two cores of your processor, a 3 GHz dual core will beat a 2.4 GHz quad core. Basically.

Heat is the real enemy. My 3.6 GHz Core 2 Duo runs cooler than most stock processors. I'm not terribly concerned, to tell you the truth.
 
As Roxyness said, gaming speed is all about clock speed, a 2.4 Ghz Quad can't compare to a 3.6 Ghz Core 2 Duo, especially when there is no multicore optimization. My move from an E8500 @ 4 Ghz to a Q9650 @ 4 Ghz hasn't been that big a difference as it was to overclock from 3 Ghz to 4 Ghz in the first place. As long as you know what you're doing and you know the constraints of your processor, overclocking is not "BAD."
 
Lolno.

My Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition is OC'd at 3.4GHz. It maybe just .4GHz more but for a first time OC'er I think its ok.
 
OC'ing is safe if you arent dumb. i have my RAM, CPU and GPU overclocked and they are running fine.
 
I think we've proven our point here...
The only real thing that's bad about overclocking is that it voids your warranty.

I can say anything I want as long as I say no offense. It's in the Geneva convention!

But really, it wasn't intended to be 'attitudal' or offensive. My apologies that it came off that way. I suppose I get irritated with all the people that say something I spend most of my time doing(increase clock, test stability for hours, repeat), and spend a lot of my hard earned money on, is a bad thing and act like I don't know what I'm doing when in reality they are the ones that don't know what they are talking about.
