Anyone using ubuntu?

My computer died like 3 days ago, and had to resort to Ubuntu. Im not gonna lie, its pretty complicated, and im having trouble getting TF2 to run. So im wondering if anyone uses ubuntu, and knows how to get TF2 to work on it, help is much appreciated :]

My friend uses Ubuntu.....but he also has to use Windows to get all of his DirectX games to work. So as far as a know you can't run DirectX games on Ubuntu.

i use ubuntu, but not for gaming. it will be alot better once valve finishes porting steam to linux.

i don't use ubuntu but know a lot of linux in genral since iv been using SuSE linux and debian since 1999

and you can run tf2 on linux but it has to run on a app called wine which is not perfect so there are a few glitches here and there.

ubuntu, SuSE, red hat, etc are all very good operating systems as long as you dont expect it to work like windows because it isn't and it's not trying to be windows.

if you just want to game just stick with and use windows

well bullets, im not really sure if youd be able to help me since you dont use ubuntu. im not familiar with any type of linux, and am clueless about what to do. im using wine to emulate steam, and i can run tf2. BUT once i get into the spawn room in any map, ill lag horribly, when i shouldnt (9800 gt) then the TF2 window just dissapears.

do you have the right nvidia drivers installed for your card

ubuntu due to how it licensed cant include the nvidia drivers by default.

and i do have ubuntu on a virtual machine

just give me a while to install ubuntu on a vm and figure out which driver you need

Well when i first installed ubuntu, it detected and installed all the drivers i need. system>prefrences>display says i have a Geforce 9800 GT which is right. im not sure if its actually using it. I also noticed in the TF2 graphics settings it wont let me change the anisotropic settings... im not really sure whats going on.

I'm not sure thats the drivers he was talking about, go to www.nvidia.com and update them to the newest version. It can't auto-update to the brand newest drivers, it was just detecting the card.

no dont do that the drievers straight from the nvida page arent packaged properley for ubuntu

ok, another thing i noticed was reaaaaally small text, like if i get a steam community event notification, the text will be really small and hard to read

l found it go to the application menu > add/remove. when it comes up with the software manager there is a drop down menu beside "show" hit it and slect "all avaible applications"
than search for "NVidia x.org 177" slect what result it gives you and hit apply changes than restart.


for gameing you really shouldnt being useing linux anyways

to fix the font search for "microsoft core fonts" in add/remove and install them

"NVidia binary X.Org driver ('version 177' driver) cannot be installed on your computer type (i386)"
^ the error message i get when trying to check the box.
I cant afford any other OS, and if i had the money id need to save it for a car. So, im trying to make due :/

I recommend you get Windows 7 RC instead, it's free and much more compatible for gaming than Ubuntu.

alrighty guys, the only problem is, before i got ubuntu on my computer, i tryed a vista repair disc, a windows xp disc, AND a windows 7 installation disc, none seemed too work because i had a problem with my registry or something, and would get bluescreened after everything i tryed.

but now that ive formatted away the vista partition they might work.
im torrenting a windows xp installation right now, and ill also download the windows 7 installation.

Before you do the install, do a clean format of the partition/drive you want to install the OS on and you should be fine.

how would i go about formatting my harddrive?
only way i know how is in the ubuntu installation which formats it THEN installs ubuntu on it
