Flat Panel TV Question

Hey guys I was just wondering which Flat Panel TV is better for gaming with an Xbox360.
Plasma or LCD?
I keep hearing arguments for the both but I want to know which is better OVERALL for gaming and movies so there is no or atleast close to none motion blur.

lcd hands down. plus the picture on many plasmas are terrible and they last max 5 years whereas youll get a lot long of a lifespan out of a Lcd tv as well as a better picture.

I myself have a 42" Samsung Plasma and I haven't even seen any burn in... Except when I play my ps3 for one hour straight and the hud is slightly burned it, you can't see it anymore after +-10 mins of movie/tv. Plus I personally think the colors are better compared to my other 45" Samsung LCD. It also produces less heat, it uses more energy tough. and they are cheaper. It's really up to you. Also my Plasma is a 100Hz one so I really love it for gaming.

zzzzzzz Expensive LCD tv's are good. That means LCD with 120hz or more refresh rate. Otherwise its gonna suck for gaming or action things in general like football or action movies. 120hz is the refresh rate which allows things to not look blurred out in fast moving scenes, this makes gaming look better and not blurry when you see everyone running around. LCD do not create as nice colors or blacks as plasma but save more energy and do last longer.

Plasmas ARE GOOD ALSO. Plasma nowadays last very long, over hundreds of thousands of hours before it burns out and all the color becomes very dark. You can still watch it but its very black. I doubt you will be using the same plasma for that long and by the time it even burns out you will probably have updated to a new tv. OLED are beginning to roll out next year and probably in like 3-5 years they will start becoming mainstream.
Back to the topic. Plasma have crazy refresh rates you wont even need to worry about it. They get like 400hz refresh rates on even the cheapest plasmas. The plasmas also hold the title for best looking high definition and most of the top 5 HD tv's cnet.com has reviewed are plasma. Plasma is also more cost friendly and will help not put a huge dent in your pockets.

In the end i say go with a plasma. You will get better picture quality for the price, it will not burn out on you by the time you update your tv, it has faster refresh rates for gaming, you can get a bigger screen size for the price of a smaller LCD one. Plasma will last you till you upgrade to an OLED.

Here take a look at the reviews, the top 2 are plasma, the 3rd and 4th are LED, and the 5th is a plasma, followed by a mix of LCD and Plasma after.

Plasma is a phosphor based technology. All phosphor based technologies WILL burn in. Plasma screens can be made to last longer by enabling 'pixel orbiting' or whatever your vendor calls it. Basically you are moving the pixel on screen enough to avoid burn in, but not enough to make the image look absolutely horrible.

The screen on LCD's will not burn in. However, the crystals in the liquid matrix can form 'memory' for certain colors kind of like those weird mood rings sometimes drift to a certain color. Its called 'image persistence'.

Again,
Plasma: better blacks, wider viewing angle; more prone to burn in.
LCD: better details, longer lifespan; looks washed out

Do this:

-Come up with a budget first.
-Go look at a bunch of places that have TV's in your budget.
-Write down prices and model numbers.
-Go look online at reviews. Pick a few contenders.
-If you can, take a dvd/blueray movie with you and ask to see the tv in action. Remember, a lot of display tv's are set in a "display" picture mode (ie super bright colors), set the tv to movie or sports mode if you are able to.
-Make sure you are familiar with the return policy.
-If your credit card offers additional protection on purchases (ie an extended warranty) buy with the card and pay it back as soon as you get home.
-DON'T fall for the pressure to buy expensive cables. Purchase them at a discount place or online. The $5 HDMI cable I bought at newegg works just like the $100 Monster brand cable sold at my local boutique dealer. We (me and my brother in law who works there) tested the two on the same TV with the same movie. No difference.
-SAVE THE BOX! Make sure everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) works before the return period expires.

Once you find the perfect TV it really won't matter if it is plasma or lcd. Just make sure you've done your homework.

I've got a 26" Samsung LCD for my monitor. It runs at 60hz, and I definitely don't have blurriness or anything of the sorts. Yes, the higher the hz, the better... but I'm always skeptical about what's really "better" anymore...

I would recommend the LCD.
Why? There's many reasons... LCD technology has surpassed plasma, plasma televisions burn in specific things... like if you play a game repeatedly for long amounts of time... you'll have a health bar burned into your screen PERMANENTLY. I won't list any more reasons... As there really isn't any reason why you should want a Plasma TV for anything gaming wise.

If you ever go to any store, ask them which they would suggest as well. If they say Plasma... I'd be cautious, as I went around asking questions for about a month... figuring out what deals would be when and so on... and all of the people I talked to suggested LCD.

Go with the LCD. You can get screen burn with the Plasma.

The refresh rate wont really change the picture much at all from our eyes point of view. Our eyes only refresh some thing like 50 times a second (not sure of exact number). A 60hz tv will do fine for any application. Another thing is for any tv under about say 50inchs, you should go with 720p, it will look the same as the 1080p, so you would save youself some money and you wont even notice the difference. I have a 40 inch sony bravia 1080p ( bought it before i knew the difference) 60hz and i use if for my comp, 360, ps3, and movies and it works great for me. Also its LCD, i wouldent get plasma because I'm forget full and may leave it on and cause burn in by accident lol.

It has been proven you can see the difference in high action scenes and games on a higher hertz. And if you forget to turn it of and it's on TV, nothing can burn in because there is no still picuture, except for the logo but you can hardly hardly see that.

Best bet with the TV is do what Jubei said, and just figure out what your needs are.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" :laugh: it is an awesome picture though!

but back to topic; when i used to work at Currys (equivalent of Best Buy in the US, i think) and we found that you could only REALLY burn an imagine into a screen if it was left on 24/7 for a couple of weeks. It was an XBox 360 display thing, when we came to replace it with the PS3 when that was first released, the XBox symbol was 'stuck' to the top right-hand corner of the screen. It is possible to get rid of it though, well, we found a way anyhow.
Plasma will looks great, but you will see that after 4/5/6 years you will start to loose sharpness in the picture and your colours will become more 'bland', in which case it's either time to buy a new TV or get your current one re-gassed.

Led tvs have the best picture. These are your basic lcd tv but are back lit with leds instead of fluorescent lighting. The leds can be adjusted in brightness to allow much greater contrast in colors, they last longer, use less energy, change quicker and the monitors are thinner.
