Frequent hard crashes after most recent patch

After the most recent TF2 update, I have been experiencing frequent hard crashes. I have windows restart after crash turned off, but I'm not getting the minidumps that I would expect after a crash.

Whenever I crash, I get a sound-loop in TF2 of the last sound to play. My screen then goes blank, but my PC doesn't reboot. It just sits in a blank power-on state.

I'm not receiving any error messages (as said above, no minidump) because of the nature of the crashes.

Could this be power-supply or power related?

Until this most recent update, I have only had CTD's or bluescreens, and those were infrequent at the worst.

Any clues?

I had similar problem in L4D. A COMPLETE reinstall fixed it.

By this I mean, deleting TF2 from steam then going to where the TF2 folder is and deleting the Team Fortress 2 folder. Only difference is mine didn't idle like your's is.

Is your video card good enough for TF2?

System Requirements:
Minimum: 1.7 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX? 8 level Graphics Card, Windows? Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX? 9 level Graphics Card, Windows? Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Again, I would try the reinstall.
If that doesn't work look on the steam support and/or forums.

Hope this helps.

Mister Adam, although I am still running XP Pro SP3, no it's not a BSoD crash. Instead of giving me the expected bluescreen + memory dump, my PC just idles in a power-on state. No restart occurs until I manually restart.

Full reinstall has worked in the past, I'll give a try again. I had expected this install to last longer than one patch though :facewall:

Except for rare times like this, I've been playing TF2 reliably (if slowly) on this PC since early last year. No hardware has changed and I'm using the most stable up-to-date drivers for my sound/video. TF2 is the only game/app giving me this problem.

Yea I'm running 64bit Vista, and TF2 crashes a lot for me too. Luckily it just says that HL2.exe failed, and closes out. Takes me 2 or 3 tries to get it working. I'll try a full install like Acid said. It's probably just something in the patch interfering with the old data, something that can be fixed in a future patch :D
