I'm sold, does this run on VMWare Workstation or what product? I couldn't find a download for it. Any chance you can hop in vent tonight?
 
Video card is an EVGA Geforce GTX 260.

BFM, it runs on VMWare player; FreakingHell can give you the details, he gave me all the links I needed (vmware, .vmx file, config data, etc). It probably took me around 20-30 minutes to get it up and running :-)

Hopefully I can convert it to VMWare Workstation without too many issues, I guess we'll see. Thanks for the info though!

I could try Vent, but lately I've had issue with my mic not working in vent.

I don't know if it will work on VMWare workstation. I have never used workstation, let alone try installing notfreds on it.

I'll send the PM I sent takeabyte to you right now, and you can try it out. The directions are for installing it on VMWare player 3.0(which now supports 8 cores) on an i7 w/ hyper-threading enabled. If workstation doesn't support 8 cores you can always install 2 instances on 4 cores each or 4 instances on 2 cores each, assumming it works on workstation. If you can't get it to work I'll see what I can find out.

EDIT: I've just read that it does indeed work on VMWare workstation, however, you need to setup 4 instances(2 cores each) to make use of all 8 cores(or 2 instances if you have hyper-threading off).

What time are you available tonight? Worst case scenario you could talk through vent and I'll just reply through steam chat.


Takeabyte, do you realize that you can also put your GTX 260 to good use for folding? It will get you another 7000 PPD.

I'm running Workstation 7, which I know is limited to 4 cores per VM, but that's not a big deal because I'm not running an i7 (yet) anyway. I should be home around 7PM Eastern but depending on how this ESX upgrade goes, tonight may end up being a long night. I'll let you know around 5PM. I'll start downloading this at my house now just so I'm ready.

Is there anything in that PM that is i7 specific?

EDIT: Nevermind, I just read through it. It's pretty straight forward. I can probably do this in a few minutes.

Yes. The part where the number of CPU's is set is i7 specific.

Instead of 8, you want to set it to 4 for a quad core, or 2 for a dual core.

Also the part where you edit the .vmx file and add which cores to use. Instead of using 0-7, you would use 0-3(for a quad) or 0-1(for a dual core). That is about the only differences in setup.

I may be heading out at about 6EST tonight, and would not be home until around 9-10EST. I'll let you know ASAP, probably around 5PM as well.

Piece of cake. I just have to wait for it to run for a while before I can pull anything accurate from fahmon. The tricky part is that Workstation can have 4 vCPUs with 4 cores per vCPU so I had to guess and picked 4 vCPUs with 1 core a piece. If I don't get the points I expect then I'll try 1 vCPU with 4 cores.

fahmon is saying I'll get roughly 3500PPD off of a Q6600 using notfreds. Thanks FreakingHell!

No problem.

Just so you know, using the viewer is not recommended. It drastically reduces performance and can cause the client to crash.

Also, if you haven't yet figured out how to add the GPU client to fahmon, just do the same thing as for the PCU client and use the folder that the GPU client is located in.
 
Yeah, I closed it right after, I was just curious :-)

Also, seems like the GPU one doesn't play nice with the rest of my system (taking longer for windows to switch over, etc), so I'll probably be using it more when I'm at work/sleepin than during my play time.

Hmm. I run 2 VMWare clients 24/7 as well as a GPU client for my 8800GT, and have no such issues. Perhaps it is the drivers you are using? Which GPU drivers are you using? I recommend trying 191.07.
 
I paused it for a bit and resumed, and now everything seems to be workin smoothly. :-)

Now I have 7624.80 for gpu and 5924.57 for VM :-D

Wait, do you mean that you are running 4 clients? If so, and you have the ability to run less, Stanford would prefer you to run the least you are able to. The guys of the Pande Labs emphasize that quick turn-around time is essential to maximizing the science behind folding.

Negative, one VM with 4 vCPUs with 1 core per vCPU. It's using 100% of all cores.
