Folding@eGO team, round 2! (If you don't know what folding is, please read)

If you are running the VMWare, just load up FAHMON and point to the VMWare area. Like \\FOLD-####\c\etc\folding\1 and if it doesnt read that, try replacing FOLD-#### with it's ip address

If FAHMON is already set up and running click on the client in FAHMON and it should say stuff to the right side about what you're working on
 
Good morning all. Just joined last night and have my home machine running the GPU and SMP clients . Just a few performance questions... from what i have read it should not affect the machines performance under any circumstance by adjusting its work . When either of the clients are running, my i7 @3.8 gets choppy. Enough to bother me. This is on both clients, even if the GPU client is running on its own it still slows down. Everything is left at default besides the lock cores to specific CPU is checked .

Another thing is CPU usage stays between 20-40 % . The slider is at default 100 % cpu use . The GPU client seems to be going well, doin between 500-550 ns/day , this number does go down when opening games but still performs choppy. TF2 for example which is good for roughly 150fps drops down to 40 with either both clients running .

Is this normal? from what i have read so far it is not. Any help is appreciated . Thanks everyone !
 
the GPU client harnesses the power of your gpu, obviously, and while it is SUPPOSED to stop working while you are doing anything graphically complicated it can mess up and think that you aren't using enough of the gpu for it to pause itself. Also the GPU client uses part of the CPU.

The SMP client is supposed to be similar in that it backs off when you use the cpu but to my experience it is better just to turn them both off whenever you want to do any gaming (web browsing is fine)

The only thing I have ever left on while gaming is the REGULAR plain old console clients (just 2 or 3 of them to not let my i7 go to waste in CSS)


Also, why did you lock the cores? I would think you would get better benefit of unlocked for HyperThreading purposes.


And to be honest the SMP & GPU clients are intended to be used by "dedicated" folding machines. In other words you shouldn't be doing much more than browsing the internet or something while they are running.
 
This is probably, one of the single most coolest things I've seen honestly. I'll have at least 10 hours a day to do this with :)

Cool thanks alot Nomad, clears up alot of stuff . About the locking of cores, i know i read it somewhere that its best to check it... either on this thread or on the FAQ on the folding site. I will see what kind of change it makes when i put it back on tonite.

Even browsing the internet is painfully slow (to me ) , as well as just flipping through windows. its working non stop from about 3am to 8pm , since last nite the stats page shows 6 work units after about 10-12 hours of folding.

About the cpu % at 40 , is that normal ? or should we be seeing a higher number ? Maybe ill just have my notebook run while im using the desktop and vice versa tho its much much slower.

Posting this from my phone so it would be difficult to help troubleshoot.

You should not notice any slowdown from running either Folding@Home clients when web-browsing. that is irregular. I will say that watching HD videos or gaming while folding on the GPU can cause stuttering though. I actually leave my VMWare on while gaming, as CPU's are designed to be able to relinquish power, while GPU's are not, so I close the GPU client

If you want to use 100% of your i7 efficiently, I can send you a tutorial via PM to setup a VMWare notfred client. This could help with the slow down issue too, since it could be a problem with your client set up.
 
Hey freaking, that would awesome dude. Something else has popped up and is bugging me. Progress has slowed dramatically on the GPU client, it loses the connection doing -- ns/day jumps up to 100-200 then goes back to 0 ns/day . Yesterday it was going great and when i got to my machine to see how shes doing, i come home to this !

Freaking, im not sure what i could have set up wrong, there is not much to set up. I did a reboot just to see and it hit 500 again, got my hopes up, then let me down. What do u all think of this?
 
PM'd. BTW, it is not recommended to use the viewer for the GPU client. it is buggy and causes major slow downs.
 
Cool glad someone told me that... It was going great last nite, strange... I just set up my bros machine and its doing the same thing, up n down. Thanks for the help Freaking ! !

If you're using the GPU client I recommend you set the fan speed to 100%; i'd think this could possibly be why folding performance is slacking . Also, my computer slows down when gaming and watching hd video; I'd do what i think freaking said, and just pause the gpu client when i start up TF2 and leave the vmware going. doing this didn't affect my gameplay at all.

still trying to figure out why i'm still getting Sending discover like 4 times then crapping out though. till then, i'm just using regular client :(

Thanks BFM, and everyone else for the help. I still have yet to figure out why the work its doing keeps jumping up n down, i cant help but think it would be something on the other end, but this is unlikely and i still have yet to hear from anyone what this may be. GPU temp is constant at 60c with 60 % fan speed... I did switch my GPU client to the tray client, was assuming this one would not have the viewer but it does only with a diff type of units . Gonna set up the VMware in a few , what advantages is there to running the client with VMware? I know kind of a noob question but virtualization is something i have not payed much attention to. Always good to learn new stuff tho...

The Linux folding@home SMP core is much more efficient than the Windows one(A2 core vs A1 core).
 
When using the VMware client, it uses all of your cores up to 100%; the windows client uses them one at a time at 100% randomly it looks like.

EG0 has 100 users folding out of how many thousand members, what can we do to get MORE doing this? Prizes are cool .

I've been to two clan wide meetings since i've joined, and it was never mentioned. I def would have joined up sooner if i heard about it at the first one.

What problems are you getting w/ vmware, dbee?

Of the hundred the majority of them folded one unit and quit.
