Folding@eGO team, round 2! (If you don't know what folding is, please read)

In this almost 60 page thread I decided to jump to the end to ask this. Can someone send me a PM on how to properly utilize a quad core processor for this? I just did a regular install and I believe it's only taking advantage of a single core.
 
DTS, you would need to download the Multi core client located on the high performance clients page. As far as getting it to work , cannot help you there bro. Cant get mine to work correctly at the moment so im missing on on an extra 12 cores/16 threads total . Only have the GPUs on for now...

Looking forward to crushing you Nomad :-) as well as Artinz and S3rvo. Yea that meeting was held just friday and i attended, thought didnt mention anything about it...

Takeabyte, gonna start all over with the vmware. Trying to get the hang of it anyway, good stuff to know . If i dont have any luck with by the end of the week, i will let you all know for sure and maybe get some help. FreakingHell sent me a tutorial on it but i still have not got it working right .

Firstly, 12 cores 16 threads?. I'm guessing you either have multiple builds with different cpu's or this is a typo?


And what's wrong with your vmware? If you can't get to the web-configuration you might need to set the vmware client to DMZ+ on your router. I had to do that to get mine to work. It should show up in your router's listing as Fold-####.
 
I like the idea but as and IT Security person I cannot allow any access to my pc's. Just part of the job.

The only access that is enabled through the client is the downloading, uploading, and execution of work units. Nothing but a work unit can be ran from the client. So it's not really access, more so borrowing of power. But whatever suits your fancy.;)
 
Sounds good Nomad, gotta give that a try. Still haven't got around to messing with the VMware again. I have an idea of what i might have done wrong and just have to start over on it.

2 i7 machines + Q8200 machine is what i meant. Also a pair of dual core notebooks could help it a bit.

Question- How much more powerful is the GPU client compared to the Single core client and the SMP client? Seems the single core client takes 9-10 minutes for each percentage to complete while the GPU takes anywhere from 45 secs to 2 minutes with normal size WU's.

Well see, you can't compere TPF(time per frame) of different work units. The SMP work units are mostly worth 1920 points, mean 1% of it is worth a lot more than 1% of a 353 point GPU work unit. PPD is the only comparison.

That being said, there are somethings the GPU can do (in terms of protein folding) that the CPU can't do, and vice versa. No one client is more important then another.

Whatever, I run one machine on average 20-30 hours a week. If I had 3 boxes with nice cpu's in em I probably would be near #2 by now. so :P

Uh, SMP = more points, more points = more importance

bumpity bump.

Can't GPU fold now for some reason.. "The prog can't start because nvcuda.dll is missing" :-(

Guess it'll take longer to pass positron than i'd hoped..
 
Oh YeAH, its been moving along nicely. Things should kick up much much nicer around April :-)
 
so any thoughts on why my vmware isn't using 100% on any of the cores? highest i've seen one all week is around 70% and just for a second..and it's only using like 6 cores at a time (2 or three "high" at a time, the rest really low)

There is a lack of 'A2' work units at the moment, so you are being supplied 'A1' works units, which are older and unable to fully utilize newer processors.
