I have yet to play the 2nd DoW because I want to finish all the originals. My friend told me that DoW2 is more unit based and micro intensive, and that you don't really build any buildings.

Are there any other key differences?

Dawn of War 1 and 2 feel like completely different games and they play completely differently, it is more similar to company of heroes with dawn of war models except a bit more mobile in game play style in my opinion. There is absolutely no base building and your hq is incredibly hard to destroy. The hero you choose before the game starts really dictates how you are going to play your game.

Overall I enjoyed dawn of war 1 a lot more than 2.

I like DoW 1 much better than the second one. Second should have been more expansions. The only similarities between the games are that the main Space Marine chapter is the Blood Ravens, they're both RTSes, and it's about W40k. Don't go expecting it to be like Dawn of War.

Edit: Imagine Halo Wars on PC and about Warhammer 40,000. It's close.

The second one focuses on unit dynamics, and you really don't do much base building at all. In single player I think the only building you do is plopping down sentry turrets as a special ability. It was very fun for a while, but the missions are extremely repetitive so it gets old. There's basically 2 types of missions, plus a few plot-point missions that are larger versions of the previous ones. Great idea, but they needed more variety.

I have to say I found Dow 2 a let down..I like building up a base and such and that game has nothing of the sort in it..But hey..thats just my opnion.

I feel the same way. :|

But I tried the board game once, and the second is much like it, in a lot of ways.

Yeah i think DOW2 is more like the board game then a RTS although i do like the multiplayer its fun and easy to get the hang of. Plus i love just building units and fighting makes the game more fun in some ways but draws back considerably in others.
