Whats the best PC I can build for $1500?

I have a friend who is building me a custom pc for a late birthday present. I already throught together a "dream" pc, which comes out to around $2500. So I wanted to see what I would get out of a $1500 deal.

Please provide me a full setup list, from mouse to motherboard please.

I want Vista Home Premium as my operating system (going to windows 7 in oct. with an upgrade disc) and at least a 21 inch monitor.


EDIT: I'll settle for $1700 if you HAVE to go over
 
You could check out one of eGO's sponsers, iBuyPower and see what kind of a computer you can make. :P

I toyed around there one day and built a pretty good box and it was somewhere around 1.5~1.6k. It had a quad-core CPU, twin 1GB ATI GPU, 8GB RAM, Vista Premiun 64 with an upgrade to Win 7 later on and so on. Of course the price didn't include shipping and other costs, but I was happy with it.

Also, the whole come was PINK! <3

e: and it did have a good monitor in the package too. Think it was a 19'' TFT.

Im sorry but dont go with AMD if your going to pay that much money.......go with the i7 920, performs better in absolutely every category and runs circles around all the AMD processors. I also ask, are you actualy buying the OS or not because OS are expensive. Also let us know if you need things like monitors,speakers,gaming mouse, headset, keyboard. Because those can add up. My build includes most of them except speakers and a headset but i did include the vista ultimate in there.

This is a much faster build and with a reasonable price, if you elimate operating system and the keyboard and mouse it will be around the 1,500 mark. Getting rid of monitor makes it even lower, around like 1,300 i think.

The "subtotal" doesn't include shipping and other things like that. There's few fun and useful things, like hte LCD monitor in front of the casing that shows temperatures, fan speeds and such.

Yeah, I agree. I didn't have to even think twice when I was building this computer whether to get an i7 or a Phenom II even though the two are not competing against each other.. but still, I am quite happy with this processor, of course I could gain a few quadrillion fps more by going i7 but even now I run games at 60+ fps so why bother. :)

Because when using nvidia 3D glasses your frame rate is effectively cut in half, so you need 120 fps for smooth performance. :P

Antec 900 is a big mistake, top 200mm fan is very breakable as is the plexi on the side panel of the case. Go with a nice coolermaster or maybe an Antec Sonata?
It's also loud and ineffective, lots of dust bunnies for you to deal with, Mine is that way :P
 
The i7 920 is 280 bucks.........the 955 is like 250 bucks..........i dont have a hate towards AMD or anything but they just cant keep up with the i7.

Jawneh, the AMD phenom x4 were fail. The reviews that came out about it were pretty bad i have to say and the core 2 quads destroyed it.

As for the build, for 1,500 u could easily build an i7 920 system with pretty much top end stuff for everything if you shop around like the one i posted. Microcenter sells the i7 920 for only 200 bucks if you have one of their stores around you. Everything else i would buy from either newegg or Amazon. Amazon has amazing deals on some stuff, for instance the Logitech G9 mouse sells for only 50-60 bucks on amazon while it goes for 90-100 on newegg.

Once again though, tell us if you want the operating system, monitor, etc... in your system because those things add up.

Yea i would try to bump a few things down in price range. like the power supply get what you need not a 1000w. try to shave a little money off about $70 and then put in the antec 1200 or the CM Stacker 830. those are i think $170
