Hello,

A few days ago my modem shut off for like 7 or 8 hours and would occasionally come back on but be extremely slow then just shut off and have 1 green light on and one blinking. The high def TV channels wouldn't work either, and the normal channels would be extremely fuzzy. It would do it at about 6 PM and do it all night pretty much until about 2am. Then it was fine for a day but now last night it started at 4am and did the same thing all night, when I woke up it was fine.

Now it shut off at about 6pm but only for like 30 minutes then came back on and half the time everythings fine but the other half everything will be extremely slow, and i'll get disconnected from what i am doing.

I called comcast and they said even if they did send a tech out he wouldn't do anything because they said my signal was fine (WTF it's obviously not fine). We saw a comcast guy across the street at the neighbors so it could be a neighboorhood thing or they could be switching to the worst internet possible.

Has anyone else been having this problem or have a fix for this? Trust me, I've done everything, but ideas would help.

For the past few nights I havnt been able to play because of this, which stinks, because theres nothing else to do in my house.

And no,
There is no FIOS at my house

So is there...anything other than comcast available?

Because seriously, they're bad business.

I had something like that with Bright House when we lived just outside Orlando. They sent a tech who checked the signal strength going to each active wall outlet and found that the wiring in the house was crap and causing all kinds of signal loss. The signal outside the house was great, but inside it was barely enough to provide occasional internet and digital cable.

The first tech who came out installed an amplifier and we continued to have problems. The second one redid the wiring for the connections we used and removed the amplifier and old splitters as we no longer needed them. The signal strength was great after that.

One other thing to keep in mind is that if they install line amplifiers and you move the physical device, it can cause problems. For example, moving an unamplified cable connection to an amplified cable will cause the cable modem to stop operating properly.

Our new house in Indiana has an amplifier due to the length of the cable runs, and I needed to tone the wires to find out which ones went where since they aren't labeled in our wiring box. If I move the cable modem to a different room, it would no longer work due to the difference in signal strength.

If you're loosing too many db of signal strength in your house/apartment/whatever, switching cable providers is unlikely to help.

Your best bet is to ask for a tech to come out and check the signal going to each of the wall jacks you're having problems with. It could be something as simple as a problematic splitter or as complex as needing rewired. FYI, I didn't have to pay anything for the Bright House rewire of the house in Florida which is one of the reasons I'm sticking with them here (until they run FiOS to our side of the street).
