Phenom II vs i5

I'm planning on making a new build soon and I'm wondering if I should just go with a Phenom II 940 (3.00Ghz) or wait it out and get an Intel i5 (2.66GHz) which is supposed to be super fast?

This is not an Intel vs AMD fanboy thread, I just want to know what you guys think. Wait it out and get the i5, or get a Phenom II, which I can get earlier.
 
the phenom II have a wicked price v. preformance ratio (especially the phenom II X2 550) but if you want intel definetly go with the i5

i also hear that the i5 will use a Sckt 1156 motherboard so it will take a while for the motherboard companys to come out with glitch free i5 mobos
 
Hm, I never thought about that. But that's one of the reasons it's taking so long to come out. It was supposed to come out in July, but they delayed it so companys can make motherboards for it.
 
I would go with the Phenom-route rather than wait out for the i5 and after that mobos for it. I'm quite satisfied with my Phenom II X4 940, but do note that I have nothing except my laptop's processor to compare it to. :)
 
Id have to go with the Phenom II X4, because the i5 in comparison to the i7 is like the Core 2 Duos vs Core 2 Extremes.

i5s are not hyper threaded so its 4 cores and 4 threads, unlike the more expensive i7s which are 4 cores and 8 threads. Also Phenom II X4 have mobo's that are for the most part, relatively glitch free while the i5s aren't even out.

So best way to go is the Phenom II X4 and if you get the 3ghz BE, youll be set for 2 or so years.
 
In some recent benchmarks, the phenom II 940 performed close to the i7's and the fact that they're so cheap and can be OC'ed up to 3.8 on just air cooling makes it the best choice.

I agree... the i5's are going to be cheap cores for the current industry, but is under performance when it comes to the phenom II. IMO AMD should kick their new series out soon and then it will be an actual competition with intel once again. Yay for AMD!

(the i9 will blow away any amd though... but it isnt anywhere near worth the price of 1000 :/ )

Umm the phenom II are okay they are definitly decent for the price but if u have the money i would go with the intels. They are faster in pretty much every benchmark, well the i7 are. Overclocking the phenom should be fine though.

If your on a budget go with the phenom even though the i5 are suppossed to be around $197. I personally prefer intel in the processor market though, but love the ATI cards right now :)

Socket 1156 will have dual cores and quad cores. The products will be branded i3, i5, and i7, depending on the features, pricing, and target audience.
 
Good to know that info on the Phenoms. Very competitive pricing for the power they have.

Given the price, I think AMD is already in actual competition. Sure, the i7 beats the 940 on every benchmark, but it is always by only a small amount. I think the price of the cpu and motherboards makes it a true competitor.

So if the i7 is on a socket 1366 how is it gonna work on a socket 1156? Unless they are doing something like AMD with the Phenom II x4 955 working on AM2+ sockets which needs bios updates and such. I dont see why they are putting the i7 on a 1156 socket when they are already on a 1366 socket
