i reset my router, i have now lost WEP/WAP or all the other wireless security options.

i really need to have WAP back...do i need to contact comcast to get them to update the firmware, or is there something i can download or will i just have to wait it out and hope an update comes along?

router is a linksys wcg-200.

If everything is at default, and it sounds like it is, follow these steps:

Open a web browser.
Enter the following IP address: 192.168.0.1 (If IP address doesn't work please open command prompt and type ipconfig to get gateway address)
Leave username blank, password admin
This should bring you to the web interface for your router. You should then be able to set the security up.

Course this is all if the information on this page is correct =P

Go to the linksys website and look up your product, look to see if they have a new fireware for download. Load your routers set up and there should be a area called settings. This should show you the fireware verison, so then you will know if you need a update. Setting up the router is a peice of cake. Most default settings are already the settings you would want. Just change the password and create a new password for the wireless connection.

If you are unable to get into your routers settings do this.
1. take a paper clip and push down on the reset button and do not let go. Hold it there for 20 secs.
2. without letting go unplug the routers powercable, and unplug the modems power cable.
3. wait 30 more secs, then let go of the reset button. then plug back in your modem and let it start up fully, then plug back in the router power button and let me start up. once you see all the lights on, try to access your routers settings to reset them to how you wish.

The support page for this router, and also there you can find the current fireware for it.

If you don't want to deal with going into router settings, the program which came with my old linksys router had an easy encryption tool, which set up WEP/WPA after you enter a key and apply settings. Otherwise, Necrosis gave perfect instructions.

i know how to log in, i go to my wireless security tab i dont get an option to choose what type of wireless security, it doesnt even give me a choice. Just says enter SSID, network type and wireless channel. in the advanced security it just asks for a passphrase, encryption level and number of keys.

before i had to reset my router, it let me pick if i wanted WEP/WAP. it even had a fancy graphic confirming i was using whatever security and that it was enabled.

my question is that will i have to just wait for comcast to push out a firmware update, or should i ask them to update it for me. is it even possible for the isp to send out a firmware update?

In that case, just as Xzbit said, hit up the firmware downloads for your router if you haven't already.

I would definitely be calling Comcast then. Odd that you can't upgrade the firmware yourself. I take it they provided you with the unit?

nope, thats the odd thing. the unit supplied by comcast was garbage so i went out and bought this one. maybe i should just go buy a newer one as this one is old.

this isn't a firmware issue, and upgrading firmware is generally un-advisable unless you need to fix a critical bug. A reset would have reverted your router to factory settings using the firmware installed on it. There's no way to revert firmware by using a hard reset, so if it was there before it's got to be there now.

After logging in, go to the wireless settings tab. Underneath that tab is a sub-menu that has options for Basic settings, advanced settings, security, etc.. The options to add WPA/WPA2/WEP should be within one or more of those options. The documentation on this router supports advanced wireless settings, I think maybe you just missed the links to find them. Are you no longer seeing those options? In that case the router is probably defective because those options should be there.

definitly nothing there about WEP,WPA, any of those. defective huh, makes sense.

Maybe. I'm definitely seeing that the router should at least support WEP and you say you can't find it anywhere, I'm pretty sure that there is no firmware upgrade that will magically add WEP so I can't honestly say what's wrong there. If you're the trusting type you could enable remote management and I could take a look at the router configuration pages, or you could call up linksys and ask them what's happened.

no there isnt any firm ware that does that, i usually have a similar problem with my router =[

Are you accessing the router wireless or do you have a lan cable plugged into it? If when you reset it it turned off the wireless function and has the lan still on there would be no need for security. If the wireless is still working then try resetting it again to see if that helps. When you search for wireless connections in your range do you see your router come up in the list?
If your router shows up what type of security does it say it has secure or unsecure? Did you try trouble shooting the problem on the site that makes your router?

just renter the SSID, network type and wireless channel. in the advanced security it just asks for a passphrase, encryption level and number of keys. This will re set up a new network and allow you to enter the new wep code

just remember all computers on the network will need to have the new information entered on them.
