Upgrading To a New everything..

Alright I have a Dell XPS 210 which is a compact desktop meant for gaming....(yeah right) And it runs an ATI Radeon X1300/1550 Series on a small motherboard and small everything.

Now I am upgrading and I have my eyes set on

As a Case:

All I need is a motherboard that uses a LGA 775 Socket as a CPU, or so I think.

I have a Hard drive, 3 GB DDR2 RAM, DVD-CD drive.

Any suggestions for a motherboard? Or other stuff?

Well, right now that isn't a bad processor by any means. The problem is you're buying a motherboard that has a socket size that won't be around for too much longer. How is your budget at this point? If you can afford it, there are some decent options that won't totally break the bank. If not, is there anyway you can continue to use your current motherboard? If so, you could save some money and get a new motherboard/cpu combo in 6-12 months.
 
But if I get this with that processor (the current one that I have) I could get maby 1 1/2 years max out of it so that would be fine
 
i would recommend a different case. XCLIO cases are really unappealing and the fans supposedly dont really help all that much. They also seem very cheap. I would say go for a Cooler Master.

I prefer the latter choice, the HAF series are amazing. I have the older brother, the HAF 932 and its great, one of the best airflow cases on the market and the smaller sibling shares the same traits except its missing the side panel fan which is sorta a biggy. Otherwise its an amazing case.

The Antec 900 and NZXT Tempest are great cases too in that price range. If you want a full tower, nothing beats the price and performance of the HAF 932.



Yea i would also recommend not going with the SOCKET LGA 775 CPU's either, just because they are being discontinued. Not that they dont perform well or anything, the Q9550 actually beats the new Phenom II X4 but i would still go with AMD. The AMD CPU's are on a brand new socket and will be more future proof, they also perform very well when they are overclocked to around 3.8ghz

As for your video card, pay the extra 35 bucks and go with an ATI 4890. ESPECIALLY THE NEW ASUS ONES THAT CAME OUT, they have new technology called super ML cap which is a new material which goes on the capacitors which ALLOWS INSANE OVERCLOCKING. YOU CAN ACHIEVE GAINS OF 300% OVERCLOCKS!!!!! and run quiter and cooler all at the same timeee. They currently have this on the ATI 4890 and GTX 285.

What you guys think? I am going to transfer my Hard Drive and Optical Drive

However Since I run a DELL XPS 210 some have told me that everything I have is fine all I need is a new case, power supplies, and that the Graphic card on the list will fit onto that motherboard that it has.
 
you should search the internetz to make 100% sure that that cpu fan will fit in the case and fit correctly on the mobo because sometimes fans/heatsinks/ram could get in the way. i'm thinkin you'll be fine but it wouldn't hurt to check
 
Also will my old optical drive fit.. some have said yes (Commanding) others have said no (Swat)

As I said before just buy the Vid card and try it out. If it dosent work then just return it to the sellers. You live in the US, returning things is not hard. Worst case you just by a new motherboard.
 
Your new system looks good, with one exception. The RAM you chose is not a good solution for a AMD system. Intel's new i7 chip utilizes tri-channel memory, and that's why newegg sells that 3x2GB kit. Your AMD 720 utilizes dual channel memory, so that RAM kit you selected isn't worth the money.

Anything like this set should do.

The Way I got this computer was from Dell and from asking around turns out that Dell imprints their own stuff onto their parts...so that my OS on my Hard drive will not be compatible with the motherboard I am going to get.

Anyone know what i am talking about i know i am not that great with explaining things.

Also Commanding the graphic card that i am getting will not fit on that motherboard.....I opened it up and used a figure I made from foam sheets to measure it out. it interfears with a cooling setup
 
im going to recommend one thing. not buying a quad core processor. it will save you a handful of cash and is completely unnecessary for 90% of everybody that owns a computer, if not more.
you can even get a phenom II x2 and unlock the remaining 2 cores if you want, because how they make them is by taking a phenom II x4 and disabling 2 cores

plugging a harddrive with OS and everything on it into a new build will generally not work well. You will want to reinstall the operating system from scratch.
 
Well I just Re-formatted my HD a week ago but I talked to caffine and his idea sounds good.. I think I will attepmt to install windows 7 from a DVD and that should override once I reformat my HD again and get rid of that dell compatability garbage.
