Microphone Issue

So basically I have had a mic for 3 months but haven't figured out how to use it. So I go to sound and click in line for recording (I have a $30 logitech clear chat style) and I try test mircophone on steam and nothing happens and then I tryed it on my laptop just to make sure the mircophone works but it didn't work again because it didn't even show up on in line under sound>Recording. So yeah also my dad built the desktop computer. The Headphones work fine also.

A little help please I don't know this kinda stuff.

Is it a usb headset or a Analog headset? If it is analog make sure it is plugged into the pink analog slot.

have you installed all the software and drivers for the microphone?

You wouldn't need drivers if it's analog. If it's connected to the front port, you will need to designate "Front Panel Microphone" under the sound control panel (Control Panel>Sound>Recording>right click "Microphone">Properties>Custom>Front Panel Microphone). For XP, roam around the sound properties and find Microphone, should be the same/similar process after that. If it is not connected via the FP, check your levels in the sound control panel and make sure it is selected under input devices.

You made it Line in? It should be Mic in.

I have also found out, on my system using the FPM(Front Panel Mic) as the recording mic, you must launch game, enter server, choose character, then go back to windows and reselect FPM. When I go back to game it works every time. If game restarts, you must reselect your FPM. I have not found a way to make FPM the default mic...

I had this problem, there is a pink slot, but you have to make sure its the pink slot that is ALSO connected to the sound card (Usually at the back of the computer, near the bottom), if you have head phones in, you may need to take a wire out, speakers usually take the mic slot too, but regardless still take it out if you need it to work, however, there will be a sound performance drop, so i reccomend you use headphones.
