Inglourious Basterds Review

We went to see this today - theater was packed, we had to que up before we were allowed to scramble in to fight for the good seats (god gave us elbows for a reason!)

The movie was, um, not what I was expecting altogether. The previews mostly show clips of Brad Pitt's character, and the other Basterds, wrecking mayhem and whatnot; well, that bit is roughly 1/5 of the total movie.

Inglourious Basterds is presented in five episodes, each one depicting different scenes concerning this alternative narrative of the war in France. Some characters do appear in multiple scenes, but not many. The last chapter of the movie is where all of the previous episodes come together and become coherent.

Although the setting is wartime France, the movie has a bit of a Spaghetti Western / Sergio Leone feel to it. Closeups of faces, tense dialogue, tremulous music building up to quick violent scenes.

Kiddy warning: don't take your kids to see this: baddads I'm looking at you! (seriously, people had their kids in there with them)

Overall: I liked the movie. It wasn't what I was expecting, but it's still a good flick. Has a bit of a pulp fiction vibe to it; you know, there's violent stuff going in, but they make it funny at the same time.

This. I'm freaking tired of this. Last time I checked it was not good parenting to let Uncle Tarantino babysit your children.

If you think it is a good idea to bring a child to a film where people have their heads bashed in with a baseball bats. Then you are an idiot.


Also seeing the film tomorrow.

Agreed. When I saw District 9, a stupid father whined about my T-Shirt for the play "Tommy," and asked why I would wear shirt representing a show with the "F-Word" in it and then I asked if the 4 year old kid talking about people blowing up was his, and he said "Yes" and I pointed out that District 9 had F-Words, and he claimed "Well I covered my sons ears through the film." I asked, "What about the violence" and heard one of the DUMBEST responses ever to such a question "Well, in a movie the violence is fake (No duh), but when they swear or make love they're really doing it!" :facewall:

As far as Basterds goes, my wife and I just saw it and I'll disagree with your review: It exceeded my already high expectations. My wife thinks its his best film yet, and while I won't say it's his best film... it's definitely his best since Pulp Fiction. And before people whine that by saying it's his best since Pulp Fiction I'm claiming I don't like any of his movies after Pulp Fiction: This is not true. I just felt that it was the peak of his career and the others weren't as good imho. The only Tarantino directed film I didn't like was Death Proof.
 
I openly wear a shirt in public with it saying Tuck Fexas on the front and get more laughs then jeers actually. Its a TTU shirt that was printed for gameday vs UT. But I guess its to be expected when I was in college and was allowed to slide.

*sigh* If it's a movie meant COMPLETELY not for kids, you shouldn't bring your kids. That's just stupid.

Also, that' parent's response is even more stupid. ;)
 
Yeah, I love the ones that say someone getting their head ripped off is perfectly fine, yet some partial nudity is just a NO.

Imo, shouldn't see either.

Wow, that's just ridiculous.

I haven't even seen District 9 yet, I'll watch that first then this one :D
 
Awesome movie! I was at first dissapointed in the lack of Nazi killing and mutilating, but the plot definitively made up for it. There are some hilarious parts in this movie that will catch you off guard.
 
It's classic Tarantino. He did Pulp Fiction the same way, which is definitely a cult classic.
 
you should get all those bad dads to take there kids to go see the next "Twilight" Movie, Lock the door and it turns out to be hostel directors cut. That would teach em.

Back from watching it. In the middle of the movie, I looked over at my friend, who looked half aslepp, and I thought, "Darn, he must hate this movie". Which would make me feel bad since I asked him to join me. But when the movie was over, he said, "This movie was awesome!" :D. It's much dialouge, but that's typical TArantino. I loved it.
 
I'll probably see it at some point, but I'm very big on remembering history for what actually happened which makes me think I will have trouble with this. I know it's just a movie and you have to take it for what it's worth, but still.

This war was real. All kinds of horrible things happened during it. Benjamin Franklin said it best when he says "I don't think there's such a thing as a bad peace. Or a good war."

I'm not saying I won't enjoy it or I won't be able to laugh at it, just saying that these thoughts will be in the back of my head while I watch it.
 
The movie was definitely classic Tarantino, and quite a few people have mentioned Pulp Fiction as similar. Was I the only one that got Reservoir Dogs vibes off of the Basterds?
 
I actually have a remark about the "brining your children to R-rated movies." and I'll sum it up in 9 simple words:

WHO THE HELL BRINGS THEIR CHILDREN TO SEE WATCHMEN?!!!!!!1111

Someone who thought it was going to be just another comic book movie. I saw a guy bring his 9 yo to Watchmen and I could think was; that kids gunna have nightmares.


Anyway I just got back from Inglorious Basterds and I loved it. I now have to reconfigure my top Tarantino list.

2. Reservoir Dogs
3. Kill Bill Vol. 1
4. Inglorious Basterds
5. Kill Bill Vol.2
6. Death-Proof
7. Jackie Brown.

definitely thought it had the RD feel to it.


I thought it was an amazing movie, VERY funny. I got to see the midnight showing so it was fun to watch with a whole crowd that busts out laughing together at some of the stuff.
 
Just got back from seeing it.

Oh. My. GAWD.


This movie is a must see. A nice blend of Pulp Fiction and RD in my opinion.
