i think so, but its the lowest power quad core and it really shows in some games like R6V2, and CoD WaW. which really sucks because i love vegas 2 and wanted to play the story mode on WaW.
 
I wouldn't go Nvidia for the Phsyx. This card has that feature, but I don't actually notice any difference in game play when it is on versus off. I'd look at total price per $ for Nvidia and Ati and make my decision that way, especially given that you are on a tight budget.

what games have you played with it? because only a handful of games do have it
 
physx is just a name....there isnt a huge performance boost or anything. Its like ATI's havok. Just check the games you want to play and see the framerates for that card with that game. The game i know of that is brand friendly is Crysis with Nvidia and maybe Farcry 2 with Nvidia but im not sure since the ATI 4870x2 gets amazing FPS on that game and matches the gtx 295.

All in all, just read reviews of the cards you have in mind and look at FPS charts of games and see which one matches what your looking for.

you know some of the duo cores for AMD are basically quad cores with 2 cores locked up and not in use. I think there is a phenom II X2 BE which goes for like 100 bucks and you can unlock the the remaining two cores to make it a quad core.

that cpu is amazing, its what i upgraded to but you can only unlock the cores if you have a certain mobo and bios setup...but if you're really on that much of a budget i would just stick with the cpu you have listed because the x2 550 isn't a whole lot better, you can see benchmarks on the 2 pretty easily with a quick google search.

i know what PhysX is and i want to use it because i love good physics. and is havok specific to ATI cards, or can it be used by both?

Yes but the thing is only 1% of the games out right now take advantage of Physx same with Ati havok. I would recommend an Ati card though as they are usually a better bang for the buck.

well in the same price range as the 9600 GT, is just the HD 3850. and right now i have a HD 3870. and i know that only a handful of games uses PhysX, and i want to play them using it. but what i would really like is a GTX 260 Core 216

I really don't mean to discourage you but the 9600 is way outdated by todays standards.
 
The 9600GT is a slightly lesser 8800GT, I'd go for a 9800GT or a 9800GTX+ if your on a budget the 4850 is very good also. You'll see around a 30FPS boost from the 9600GT to the 9800 and a 45-50 with the 9800GTX+/4850 depending on your CPU.

what about the 8800 GTS overclocked or whatever with the 320-bit interface?

It's ok if you can still find one, but make sure to get the 8800GTS 512MB (G92) and not the 320MB or 640MB versions as these are worse then the 9800GT and not worth the price. If I were you I'd try and get a 9800GT instead as it'll be less of a headache to hunt down.

yea a 9800 GT is in my budget, barely, but yea thats the one im gonna get

the 9800gt is fairly expensive and the same price as the 4850 i showed u unless you get this 9800gt which is a fairly good deal.

Its 75 with rebates which isnt bad considering all the other 9800gt are like 95 dollars and up.

Why would you opt for the 9800gt though? the 4850 is $95 and it averages about 10 FPS more over the 9800gt and even more FPS at higher resolutions like 1680x1050 and up.

The 4850 is the best bang for buck card out there right now and the 9800gt is just a rebranded 8800gt. I would opt for the 4850 and the great performance boost it brings with it.
