Problem with my younger brother's computer.

So, my friend gave me an AGP card for use on his computer, which needed a new video card. The card was a BFG 7600 GS. For some reason, there isn't much of a performance change, because he plays TF2 on the lowest settings, on DirectX 8 only achieving 20-30FPS, the same as his old card, which happened to be an ATI Radeon 9000 64MB.

Is there any solutions to fixing this? He should at least get above 30 FPS with the card and the specifications he has.

Specs: P4 2.6ghz, 1.5gb ddr ram.

He has not tried any other game because TF2 is basically the only game he plays. And his new card is stronger in comparison, and the previous owner had no problems with it. (He also gave it to me for free).

Actually the 7600GS should be more powerful than the Radeon 9000. The 9000 was compared to the GeForce FX 5200 when it was popular.

I know that. You didn't read the whole thing, did you? I thought it would be a huge performance boost since I've acquired that card for him, yet there wasn't any improvements for some odd reason. And the whole point of this thread was to remedy this problem.
 
i would make sure there isnt remains from the old amd/ati drivers left behind and update the nvidia drivers.

and did your force it into dx8 because im pretty sure soruce default to dx9 with that card
 
Is it possible there is a CPU/memory bottleneck? There comes a point when throwing a better GPU at a game simply makes no difference without upgrading some other part of the system.

did you try changing the settings for tf2 in the game to higher setting to see how the new card performs? The game will keep the last recorded settings of play until it is reinstalled or you change them.

update the drivers for the new card and install direct x9.
 
Yes, I've changed some settings. It actually worsens. I'm pretty sure that a P4 2.6GHZ processor would suffice for a 7600 GS AGP, but it has the same performance as his old card (Radeon 9000 64MB).
 
My old PC was a 2.5ghz 2gb DDR2 with a 7800GTX and I never broke 30fps no matter how I fiddled with the settings. Somewhere in that system is a bottleneck. You can expect modest gains by doing any of the following: lowering graphical settings, overclocking CPU/GPU/RAM, or upgrade any of the previous. You could try cleaning out drivers and reinstalling to fiddle with some specific settings but I wouldn't get my hopes up, just how it looks from here.
 
I'd go with what the guy above me said.
Throwing in a card does nothing if other parts can't keep up.
