It wouldn't, but if you can't burn a cd, that's another symptom.

The best thing would be to pick up a second HDD. Whatever you can get your hands on. Install it and remove the other HDD from the Boot order, or just unplug it. Then install the OS on the second drive and see how it works. Then your original setup is still intact, if that drive is ok.
