When I bought my i7 920 it came with some pr-applied to the stock heatsink. I ended up takeing the stock stuff off and useing some mx-2 insted.

It is always pre-applied on the stock heatsink/fan. An upgrade to Arctic Silver 5 is recommended though.

eh i just use the stock HSF as is, cant argue with an 400MHz OC for free

ya it will come stock, usually preapplied. keep in mind if you remove the stock stuff and apply some other junk it will void the warranty
thats also for using the stock fan/heatsink if it came with it

yes they always come on the stock heatsink.....or if you buy one it will come pre applied but you dont know what company has made it so yes i bought some its like 8 bucks but well worth it go with arctic silver

You can buy OEM (No retail packaging) processors from Newegg and other places that do not come with a heatsink. In which case you will have to buy a heatsink, but they still comes with pre-applied paste. Just be aware of what you are buying.

they all come with the thermal grease but they are usually cheap and not as good as Arctic Silver 5 and such. Usually when you apply the Arctic Silver you can see temperature drops already and adding an aftermarket cooler just lowers the temperature even more.

If you're not a hardware enthusiast into overclocking and benchmarking I don't think it is really necessary to buy thermal paste and re-apply it. With the stock intel/AMD heatsink you'll be lucky if you can get a 5?C change in temperatures. Not enough to impact performance or lifespan of your processor. Stock thermal compound on most heatsinks, while not spectacular, is perfectly adequate. However, after a few years when your thermal paste begins to degrade or dry out you may consider re-applying it. I would buy thermal paste then rather than now.

If you enjoy overclocking and benchmarking buy an upgraded heatsink along with thermal paste to make a worthwhile impact on temperature.

Very nicely put!
