I know there are a ton of laptop users in eGO and i just want to show you something that you may already know or may not know. Its called the Vidock2, idk how old it is but it will be very useful to those who only use laptops because it allows for any Desktop graphics card to be used with your laptop. Its basically an external graphics card dock but it allows all ATI cards and Future ATI cards so this thing is futureproof also. I dont know if it supports all the Nvidia cards though but it says it that Nvidia is working on it.

This thing comes at a price though, it costs $380 at the site i just gave you and there are virtually no places that sell this thing. Atleast no retailers from what i could find. I first saw this thing on Xoticpc.com a while ago when i was just customizing a laptop. They gave the Vidock2 as an extra add-on for also $380.

I just brought this up because i posted this on the external graphics card thread and i just figured that since so many ppl use laptops in the clan, this thread might be useful for those looking for the answer.

Ive seen this before, I thought about getting it but I chose not to because of the price. It would be a better investment to put the money toward a desktop. And you would have to have a really good laptop for this to run games like a desktop.

If they come out being able to support Nvidia, I already have an 8900 GTm, would I be able to get another card and run SLI, even if its a different kind?

lets see u say u have a 8900gtm in ur laptop already. They say you can Crossfire so basically it works as the 2nd card the vidock. For Nvidia, the site i gave may not have been updated and that is why i say that all the Nvidia cards may be supported now so you could possibly go and buy like an card=to or greater than the one in your laptop so you dont lose performance when you SLI it. I am not fully sure about what you can do with the Vidock2 as there isnt much information on the web about it and there are a very few amount of sellers out there.

If Nvidia cards are supported by now, i see no reason why you cant SLI it as Vidock2 already allows ATI cards to be Crossfired, this thing says it supports all future cards also.

I can do some more reasearch if you would like and dig up all the info i can and see if Nvidia is supported by now, the website i linked said that Nvidia was working on it but i think it hasnt been updated in a while so ill check it out.
Nvidia does allow you to SLI with different cards as does ATI but the problem is that the 2nd card downclocks to the slower card. If you buy a slower 2nd card then the card in your laptop will downclock and you would lose performance. The overall performance would still be faster since ur adding a 2nd card but you arnt fully utilizing the max performance you can get with ur laptop GPU and the external GPU.

Edit: i take wat i said back. After reading around, i havnt really seen a single word about Crossfire or SLI. I guess my mind played tricks on me and i thought they said it could run crossfire and such xD.

Vidock2 seems to be that it only works with an external monitor. It basically just turns your laptop into a desktop from what i am seeing.

This youtube video gives a good idea of the performance increase you get though with the 4670.

Devil May Cry 4 - [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE5NmURV5P8[/ame]

Crysis - [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCK5dLWiO2Q[/ame]

The links above are videos on the games from what i could find on youtube.

Alrite i found a link that should answer almost everyones questions about Vidock and all the upcoming cards. The max card supported by vidock 2 is the 4670. Nvidia has not been supported yet but they will be in the near future. There will be upcoming Vidock versions that will support faster ATI cards, Vidock 3 will support up to a 4770 and the Vidock 4 will support the latest and greatest like the 4890. This is very interesting and i cant wait to see how the later Vidocks turn out to be. There is still no information on crossfire or SLI yet and i dont think it is supported.

why spend 400 on an add-on when you could just build a decent desktop for $500, and then upgrade it along the way?

ehhh some people dont have that option, a $500 desktop isnt that good either....you would have to cheap out on a lot of stuff. Some people have decent laptops already, just lacking a good GPU. The Vidock2 helps a lot unless you have like a monster computer like an alienware m17 or something, i doubt this would improve your performance.

This vidock will be very useful when they come out with the ones which will support cards up to the 4890 and higher. There may be a problem of bottlenecking but vidock supposedly takes that into account and there is only a 6% decrease in performance.

really pew pew I can build a awesome $500 computer

Give pewpew a break desktop fan boys :P, First of all desktops aren't viable for everyone. I could see $750 great computer, but maybe your awesome isn't my awesome. Some people need to have laptop for work and school. It isn't economical to buy a $750 desktop just to game if on a tight budget (decent monitor and keyboard will run you another $200). It could be due to $ or space. Instead cheat that $250-400 and get this cool find.
-- this is on the assumption of the laptop is current and only computer you have.

yea, calm down a bit. Its actually pretty hard to build a $500 computer with decent parts. Show me a $500 build and prove me wrong but i doubt you can build a decent one even without buying the OS. I think maybe adding $100-200 you could definitly build a good computer but not really with $500. You would have to cheap out on a lot of stuff.

Anyway, yes i know this Vidock thing is expensive, im not rich myself, im just posted this for those out there who need a gaming boost and use a laptop while a desktop isnt a option for them and for those with old laptops that need a GPU upgrade without buying a whole new laptop.

works with future cards ? no high-end long dualslot cards which would be more usefull....

Because he probably only get 1 computer, and he needs a laptop because he is going to school and needs to be mobile. Thus, he cannot get a desktop.

I have a similar situation. I can afford building a really nice desktop, but my school is too far from home, so a huge desktop would be impossible for me to carry back and forth. However, I wouldn't want to part from such a nice computer, even for a week. I'd rather not start until I can stay in one location. Therefore bumping up my laptop with something like this might be a good solution, though it does seem quite expensive.

Ok so here you go pew pew

For your OS us linux and to game use wine so how you doing?

you can get windows 7, vista, or xp with the MSDN AA link I posted in another thread for $20.

I'd spend the extra hundred on:

XFX 4870 ($70 more)
Cooler Master Elite 335 ($28 less)
Phenom II X3 720 ($59 more)

compared to the build above. For those of you doing the math, that's $101 more than the build above, bring the grand total to just under $500.

Anyone who says a rig with that processor and graphics card isn't a great setup to play games is just dumb or ignorant.

I stand corrected but why are u being so touchy and aggresive. It was just a post and you got all mad and everything. I was just posting an option to those who can't build a desktop and its not an option for them. I was just trying to help and you just put me down. jeez
im sorry i didnt really believe in building a $500 computer

Pew Pew, WitchPuncher just post an option for those who don't know what to do between your option and the one he is showing. Don't get mad guys, you guys just showed 2 great option for those who have a laptop and looking to play with it or build a nice system for under 500$. It's nice to compare to make a brilliant choice!
