why so just put your data on it own drive or partition and do a win7 clean install

it is possible to upgrade from vista sp2 but you will also end up keeping a bunch of bloat that you dont need doing that.

Partitioning is actually very simple but time consuming you can google it then print out the directions maybe try it on a spare but working hard drive with nothing that you want to lose on it. Even though it may seem hard once you've done it successfully once its cake the rest of the time it seems intimidating at first, but you'll quickly get over that.
