DDR2 1066 and AMD Phenoms

Nope a processor controls the speed of the ram for instance if you use a (AMD) AM2 Dual Core CPU with DDR2 1066 the cpu will automatically run the ram at the speed of DDR2 800 because the dual core AMD's do not have the instruction set for DDR2 1066 thats why you need a Phenom and i just read that Phenom II X2's support DDR2 1066 as well as DDR2 1600.
The only thing the mother board controls is what type of ram you put in it either DDR2 800/666/or 1066 or higher.

That'd be a world record. Highest ever DDR2 clock is like 1557 or something like that. And that was by an extreme overclocker with some LN2 RAM cooling.

Hmm well maybe i got my DDR mixed up thought there was a 1600 maybe i was thinking of 1200.
i have that exact setup

and yes it runs at 1066MHz
Alright cool thanks reflex, how well does your system work? Is it fast, have you ran it with windows 7? This system im building is for my wife, but we won't be building it until after we get this years tax return.

it runs like a dream, 4gb is plenty for the windows 7 I am running, but personally i don't think that the 1066 was worth the $ over the 800, just IMO
i also got the 550 BE OC'ed to 3.5GHz on stock cooling, and i can push it to 3.8, but i lose stability in burn-in tests
the only way you could do better (in clock speed) than the 550 is to buy the quad-core 955, but i only really play games so i got the dual core instead.

are you running dual channel or just 1 stick or what....cause i heard that most systems running ddr2 1066 will only run with 1 stick and dual channel won't work...i dunno just what i heard.
im curious cause i have the same cpu and want (for now) 1 stick of 2gb ddr2 1066...(actually the same price as 2x1 gb 800) for $27.99 after $10 mail in rebate and i just want to make sure everything will work well.
did you have to manually change the speed in bios?

i indeed am running dual channel
2X2gb Corsair XMS2 @1066mhz
BIOS's are really stupid (not the smartest guys in town)
so you need (usually) to adjust ram speed manually

Good to know my wife does not game much but her old computer which is well over 5 years old (its a socket 939 running a AMD anthlon xp 1.8GHZ) is really starting to annoy her at the time it takes to do certaint tasks which we cannot mention here. So im building her a sweet sweet computer which should help her out alot. This is what i was thinking of getting her. Im using a older case thats why im going with Micro ATX to ensure there is enough room for 2 DVD burners and a nice 1TB hard drive with room for air flow.

Juat get the 800. You woulnt notice a difference between that and 1200
I know that gaming you might not know the diffrence or see much of one but my wife is huge into backing up data *ahem* and uhh well wants to backup 2 disc's at a time =\ :facewall: so that makes all the speed you can get the better
