what should i get?

what should i ask for christmas? a new graphics card? or a new cpu?
i have an ATI HD 3870 and a Phenom 9150e (1.8GHz) but i might be selling my computer and be getting a new one before then.
and heres what i had in mind
GTX 260 core 216,
or
Phenom II x3 720BE 2.8GHz
 
It's a toss up, really. Personally, though, I would get the processor. Think of it like building a house: you can always add-on, but it's not so easy to change the foundation.

So I'd probably get the Phenom. It'd make things much simpler down the line.

Complete System specs would be great bro. If your machine is custom built and not say a dell or something, see what kinda overclock you can get out of your current Phenom.

I posted on your other thread about the AM3 cooler and the same dude im talkin about has the same processor (720be) overclocked to 3.6 with no problems, very low temps.

Im not an ATI guy, i personally have gtx 260 and you can never go wrong with it, but for its price you could very well get a 720BE AND a 4870 which would do very well together for a little bit more.

Tell me you're joking. He can get a 260 or a new phenom 720, and you're recommending a video card that is twice the price of his whole budget, plus an i7, and a $200+ motherboard as well. Not to mention he'd want new ram.

Stop giving bad advice, please.

This is a close call, I think you should wait until October to decide, as prices will have changed considerably by then. The video card market is due for a shakeup with the new cards coming out, and any advice given now is highly subject to change by Xmas.

If it was your birthday today, I'd say the processor due to the low clock speeds and lack of good multi-core support of most games right now.

i am leaning more towards the processor now, but if i get my new computer, im thinkin about the GTX 260
 
Before upgrading your processor make sure your motherboard supports the processor you want. Just because you have the same socket and it will fit does not mean it will run in your motherboard.
 
Ask for some stock. Then save that up until the economy recovers and sell it off for more than it was worth when it was bought.

By then a new model of processors will be out along with a new video card and you can afford to purchase it yourself. Or if your stock did really well, then you can buy a new car.
(Actually the better thing to do would be to buy property but that's a whole new other ball game.)

If he has a phenom in there now he should be able to put a phenom II in there, they make it so you can do that...

AM3 is compatible with AM2+, which is what i have now. i know all the specs/requirements/compatibility, but just wondering which one i should get.
 
The GTX 260 is a great choice right now. I fight the urge to replace my 9600GT with it daily. Just know that ATI is coming out with their new 5xxx series, and nvidia should follow with their gtx 3xx series. This should push the price point of the 260 down. Phenom II's might stay stable in price through the holiday season, or they might see a drop, that is less certain.

My best guess, and it is purely a guess, is that the gtx 260 will drop in price more than the phenom ii's will. I'd ask for the proc. for XMAS, and spend the money your grandma gives you on a new, now affordable, gtx 260.

As a general rule, AM3 is compatible with AM2+, but I would still consult your motherboard's manufacturer's website and make sure you have your ducks in a row before you ask for anything. You might have to update your bios, or you might find that the board doesn't yet support the chip. Better safe than screwed as I always say!

It makes me laugh when people just arnt even thinking and say something like that. I mean lets think about this a $150 video card or a $120 cpu and you want him to spend $400+???? Im baffled :)
 
Get the processor, your processor sucks no offense and if u got a GTX 260, i think it would bottleneck with ur current CPU. The new Phenom II are great budget CPU's that actually perform decently compared to the intel chips but they dont really come near to the intel chips in the end.

lol i agree but its quite funny to read

80108, yea you need to check if your motherboard is compatible. From what i hear, there are barely any mobo's our there that are compatible with both AM3 and AM2+ and yes most of them need the BIOS updates to make it work.
