Are gaming mice really necessary?
Heres my position and what im thinking. I primarily play CSS and some other single player FPS games and blah blah daily use whatever. I want to improve my CSS gameplay, if i can, by buying a mouse but im very skeptical it will actually make a difference.
Currently im using a $10 Logitech M-UAE96 optical mouse though i haven't been able to find a list of its specifications (dpi/fps/whatever). However at my local store they have a few options available and i just want your input on the various options and how they perform.

The Razor Copperhead known to be a great gaming mouse. Specs are 2000 dpi 1000 hz 1 ms response time and High speed motion detection, up to 45ips and 20g / Over 7080 frames per second.

Now the only problem i have with my current mouse (most likely caused by my high in game sensitivity) is when i move my mouse slightly, the crosshair bounces like so:

but what i'd like is to see it move as such:

for a basic illustration. Is there any specification that makes the mouse movement that precise and smooth? or is it just set by a lower sensitivity.
I do not want to spend 80 bucks on a mouse that does the exact same thing as my 10 dollar one i already own....plus...

OCZ Equalizer has even higher dpi and the same frames per second as the copperhead, but only cost 30 bucks...so why would i spend so much when i can get (possibly) better performance for less??

Logitech G5 Laser Mouse

Tried and true. This thing improved my gameplay drastically. I had a cheap-o Microsoft optical mouse that cost me like 20 bucks or so. The G5 is a a great mouse - I love it. Many have told me they like it better still than the new G9. So, I'm glad I got it.

Of course, this is just my opinion and my experience with it.

I have a gateway mouse that came with my computer and I still to find any issues with it besides my mouse feet disappearing.....
 
I have a $20 mouse and played with a $100 gaming mouse and didn't really see a difference. Same thing with keyboards.
 
all i can say is that after using a small wireless mouse from logitech for a few months i found that it started getting really jumpy, I then decided to buy a razer diamondback 3g and it has lasted around 5 months with perfect precision and everything just feels so smooth. Im by no means a pro player but i do like surfing in css and i found that it became dramatically easier to turn quickly and smoothly. It has probably saved me money in the long run with purchasing a high quality mouse.
 
gaming mice=worth it

Better tracking, more precise, custom weight, and features like adjusting dpi on the fly all make gaming mice worth it.

Go buy a Logitech G5.

Don't get too hung up in the dpi that each offers. Remember that quality and driver support factor into price. People tend to swear by logitech or razer, I personally fall into the logitech camp. I'm sure razer offers good stuff too.

Don't underestimate the surface either. I use a ratpadz xt mouse pad, and it is well worth the $20. The surface affects the friction and feel of the mouse. It also can affect tracking of the laser. Plus, I like how it looks on my desk.

Keyboards are less likely to affect your gameplay, but I like one with a nice feel and backlighting. That being said, I think the cheap Dell keyboards have a nice feel :)
 
imo skill > gear. Since I already know that you have pretty good skill, I would advise against buying a $100 Mouse. And like you, I use a very high sensitivty setting in game (10.5) Try the Logitech Mx518. It doesn't have the weights like the G5, but its nice for the 2 additional buttons and the on the fly sensitivity change. Also, make sure the lil feet on ur mice are cleaned regularly and the mouse pad as well. Alot of dust and grime can build up on the feet of your mouse and could be causing the skippin.

I've been ranked in the top10 of our css servers for the past year or so, and I am using a $10 no name keyboard and a ball mouse (wtf is optical!!!) j/k i'm using the Logitech Mx518. I have had this mouse for the past 3 years, it very durable and I have clicked the crap outta the mouse 1 button in that time and its still going strong!

The main thing about gaming mice is that they are very sensitive, so I guess if you're good it'll aid your precision aiming. They also tend to be shaped better and have nicer features, and flashy lights. It won't make you a better player, really, but it can complement your ability greatly.

I agree with the G5 recommendations, though Logitech's releasing a G550 soon to replace it, and it will have nicer features. Consider waiting for that; even if you still want the G5 it'll probably lead to a price drop in the G5.

i really love my G-5 and wireless G-7 and wont get another gaming mouse IMO.
 
I had a Logitech G5 Laser before my current mouse. It's not a bad mouse, but it broke on me for no reason, because it wasn't working with software on my computer correctly, and i have no idea why.

Now i have a Razer DeathAdder and absolutely LOVE IT! Drastically improved my CS:S gameplay and TF2 gameplay, even from a Logitech G5! It's awesome, quite sensitive, and very sleek and smooth. It is absolutely ideal if you are right-handed and play lots of FPS games! (Note it's for right handed people only!)

So IMO, definitely go for a Razer ;)

These mouses are definitely smooth like a baby's bottom. I actually have a preference for the G5 as I been using that for two years till I wore it out (long story).

Right now I have the G9 and although I like the additional options they added in, its basically the G5 with the cosmetic upgrade. If G5 is cheaper, I would definitely would go with that. However one of the pro's of G9 is that they did build it to last longer.

[edit] Razer's and logitechs are both good brands. The deal breaker lies in which mouse your hand is most comfortable with. I would go to the nearest BestBuys and feel their demos before purchasing if your not sure.
 
I had a thread about this a while ago and everyone said to get one. so i went to best buy and got some 6 dollar one and really to tell you the truth i see nothing different at all.

also if i wanted a "gaming mouse" type of deal i wouldn't go buy a logitech g5 for 60-70 bucks, i'd buy something like the 30 dollar one i linked in my initial post which has all the same specs as the higher up mice...i don't care about weight/buttons etc.
i dunno if im really convinced enough to do it, except for the fact that i could do it to test it myself and find out for sure ya know

My local walmart has the g5 mouse (bf2142 skin) for 29.95, should check yours out. for $30 its one heck of a mouse
