Over the next few days we'll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We're going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system. Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today, this time we're only removing the items earned through cheating the system. Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we'll remove all of their items. If you're interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2's community will be affected by this cleansing process.

Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats.

We realize there is a high level of demand for items, and we're still working on systems to allow you to find them in new ways (via Trading, and crafting duplicates into desired items). However, we need to draw the line at running external applications.

Thanks Valve. I love you again. Best part: Those of us who never idled, get a hat. Sometimes it pays off to be legit.

Eh, never used it, so this doesn't bother me.

Edit: Yay! I'll get a hat since I never used an Idler :P.

I've been waiting for this for awhile.

O...M...G! I finally get a slew of new hats! Some of my friends though, shall not.

I love it, still dont know how they'll tell whose been idling but anyway "yippee for me"

Well, this didn't fix anything any just makes people mad.
*goes to idle in a real server*

Wow

Punishment > Improvement.

VALVe is going the EA way, and EA is supporting their products now.

THIS IS STUPID D:<

interesting idea. wonder how it'll work though, assuming all is well, YAY! a hat!

About time to be honest. Some guy on my friends list has over 900 hours on tf2 just by being Idle

Ok, If I used it but never got anything does that count?

I idled. Yep.

I'm not complaining that I didn't get any hats, and now miss out on another, I'm just displeased with the incompetent drop system. An elementary student can see that punishing those who idled is palpably unjust.

To quote someone from the steampowered forums:

....Idling is responding to an incentive. It's like punishing a donkey for moving when you wave a carrot in its face.

Think seeding falls under this? Can they tell between idlers and seeders? I mean, think of how many people in eGO seed. It'd suck for them to lose everything just because they wanted to help out.

And yes, there's a little self-preservation in there too :p

I would strongly doubt seeding would fall under the premises as idling. The most logical solution would be to track the three idling servers (used in the idling program) and keep track of whoever is on there. Everyone caught in the act gets any items removed.
