Goodbye Idler

I like how they reward people who don't use the idler, when their retarded system is what made people feel they had to.

Here's a novel idea: Make hats based off skill, maybe K/D. If it dips below a point your hat goes away for awhile. Stops idlers, stops farmers, bam.

But no, we'll just give them out to any random Joe who sits in Spectator.

No way. My KpD is crap so I would never get anything.

I think their system is fine, it encourages people to play the game. It keeps them coming back to see what they can get while playing the game. Which above all, is the most important part.

Meh, I used the idler here and there but never got a hat. The one hat I do have is one I got while playing on Turbine. I couldn't care less about the lack of a halo, either.

Seeing some of the actions and comments from members of eGO directed at other members is disappointing, though. There are a good amount of you that just lost any respect I may have had for you. I didn't know that talking down to/acting superior to other clan members was part of being an e, eG or eGO.

Those that have acted maturely during this entire situation, idler or non-idler, you have earned more of my respect.

edit: Thank you Servo for providing me with signature material.

Agreed. Acting holier than thou over a video game? C'mon guys, we're better than that. :)

Well, this stinks. That program didn't even get me anything! I ran it twice, got six level 5 and 10 items that were instantly deleted, and now I don't get a hat. And now my brother blames me for not getting a hat, too. Sometimes, I hate that I look at these forums, because that's how I got interested, learning that it doesn't get you banned.
The only thing that could make this better is if they gave the idlers some kind of permanent mark of shame. Or if they hurried up and made that crafting system they mentioned in the article.

Edit: Some kind of way to make it so dying doesn't count as an action, so the idler map doesn't work? Like you have to move around and be in a server with X amount of people? And if you get a kill within a certain time gap or the timer will cancel? These are just crazy suggestions to help fix the community of "cheaters". They aren't cheaters, but they are exploiters. I was one, and now I realize, just because something works and won't get you banned, it doesn't mean you should use it.
End of ridiculous speech.

Edit2: Okay, now I feel really stupid...I used a program that accessed my Steam account that automatically updates...at any moment, the creator could have changed the function of the program. You probably see what I'm thinking.

What can you do now that you can't use the idler?

HELP OUR SERVERS. They are in desperate need of players between the late hours, especially in the mornings up until late afternoon.

Can't donate? Want to contribute in other ways? Seed our servers. Play for a bit, invite your friends. As long as people see that there's more than 1 or 2 people on the server, they will come play.

Let's not let our servers die!

this deserves it's own thread.

I'd love to get a hat. I've probably played 4x as much as most people with a hat.

Same here. Im on TF2 an unhealthy amount of time, yet still no hat. Nothing i hate more than getting pwned by some noobish Scout with a Baseball Helmet and a FaN he "randomly" unlocked, even though ive played hundreds more hours than him (Or her.)

I'm going to just go out and say this:

The main difference between me and most of the the people who got the halo was that I saved $80 in energy bills by not running a graphically intensive program when I idled.

:D

Seriously. The idler offers NO advantage over just starting TF2 up and idling in an idle server. I really did save a boatload of money by not having TF2 open, so why punish people for using it? It strikes me as plain DUMB to do such a thing.

BTW, Valve, we're over. Don't even bother calling me for anything short of "FREE L4D2 FOR YOU."

lol, I know right? I honestly don't think I'm getting L4D2 anymore 'cause of this. Just feels like such bad customer service, saying that they don't care about the idler despite the fact that it was then as it is now in breach of EULA, then laying down the harshest mass-punishment they have to date. It's just bad business Valve.

Worse yet is they create this great divide between "cheaters" and "non-cheaters" with the bloody halo. It's a game, people get pissed as it is, don't give them more of a reason to hate each other. Just play and have fun, for pete's sake.

all the delicious QQ's in this thread. they sustain me. they taste soooooo freakin' sweet! oh yes. yes, crymoar. oh dear god they taste even better fresh!

nomnomnom

Hahahaha, it's like the Cartman chili episode on South Park.

Well, that's easily farmable.

I go into an achievement server. Kill a bot over and over. My k/d is 100/0. Wow, I get 30 hats.

This. Valve won't receive another dime from me. They've set the customer service bar at an all-time low. I won't support them any longer.

I idlied, got no hats. Now 75% of my backpack is gone. I had all the weapons before I started to idle.

To quote a guy from steam forums;

""Sir, I'm going to have to write you this ticket for a ?200 fine."
"But why, I haven't broken any laws."
"Well, you see, I saw you smoking in this bar 3 months before the smoking ban. As you are aware, smoking in public areas is now illegal."

Sounds ridiculous? In any modern court of law, the case would be dismissed. But this is exactly the sort of logic Valve is using (they even admit it in the blog post - "having previously held no position.") Clearly Valve are backwards."

It is a breach of EULA though Synn.

And as far as Valve making their "Valve" uber-weapons...well, the EULA is only for EU's, if you catch my drift. They're devs, they get free reign and aren't required to sign an End User License Agreement.

Heres my thing.

I don't care I lost my idle stuff. I honestly didn't get anything in the idler anyway.

I don't care that I didn't get a halo. The thing looks terrible and its buggy as crap.

What gets me is that I'm being called a cheater. For a policy that valve did not have to begin with.

Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today

This does not sit well with me at all

Well, I used the idler and I'm not going to lie, I pretty much got what I deserved and have no regrets. Sure, I'd probably feel a bit different if I actually got a hat through the program, but it wouldn't really bode well with my conscious if I got one with it anyway.. but then again, I'd feel different if Valve hadn't taken anything else away. =p

Sure, I'm a cheater in a sense, I got what I deserved for exploiting a system, I'm a big boy, I can deal with it. I just wish that everyone else who were so 'outraged' by this would come to a mature stasis about the situation. I'll continue to play TF2, but I wouldn't be surprised if Valve severely lowered the chance that the idlers would get a hat as well but didn't say it. Hats are cosmetic items, but dammit they're cool. I want my Pyro hat, dammit!

tl;dr
I'm a cheater, got what I deserved, now gimme my Pyro hat.

Again, how is this any different from the achievement servers and the idle servers?

Its the EXACT SAME THING as the idle server!

And the Achievement Unlocker users? They got a halo.

So in effect what Valve is saying is that idlers are worse than hackers and cheaters...

You've gotta think though -- despite the fact that Achievement Servers provide hollow Achievements to people who look for a quick bragging right, the difference between the Achievement Servers and Idler is user input. The Idler was a third-party program and you had to do nothing, the Achievement Servers actually involve you doing something, even as minimal as it is.

If I was Valve, I'd be a bit timid at third-party systems exploiting the game, but that's just me.
