So I got this new pc for school purpose and the internett won't work:

It's a Laptop, HP Elitebook 8530p with Vista OS.

When I plug in my Ethernet cable which works just fine on other computers, it just says

[My computer name] ------- Internett ----X---- Internett

And when I hold my mouse over the little icon in the right lower corner it just says "Local Access".

Can anybody explain how to fix this problem? And please if you got the time, can you please add pictures on where to click and stuff, and also I'm not familiar to Vista.

Any help is deeply appreciated!

What is your set up? If you're using a router, it may have access restrictions on it.

Let's run down a checklist...

Are you sure the notebook came with the Ethernet drivers installed? Check this way Start > Control panel > System > Device manager, and check under the "Network adapters" field.

If you don't see any yellow exclamation points, and you see that the device is functioning correctly, go on to:

Check your IP address with the cable plugged in. Go to Start > type "cmd" into the search field, click the cmd icon when it shows up. Then, in the prompt, type "ipconfig" and tell me what it says for IP address.

If you have a 169.x.x.x IP address it means DHCP is failing to give you a proper address, either because of software configuration or something else. If you DO have a valid LAN IP (I'm assuming you go through a router and don't connect directly to the modem, and this IP should look something like mine in the picture) then try pinging your gateway. type "ping x.x.x.x where x is the IP address of your gateway, and you can see that from the "ipconfig" command you ran (see the picture). It should look like this like the third picture below... If you have a valid IP and you cannot ping your gateway we may have to dig a little deeper and check to ensure you are using DHCP and have not manually configured the connection, but we should be able to tell from the output of the ipconfig command and gateway ping.

Also, have you tried right-clicking on your ethernet connection and hitting "Repair"? Try disabling and enabling the connection, also.

We'll start with that and go from there.

WHen this happens to me, all i have to do is unplug the power to the modem and wiat 10 sec and plug it back in, it should work.

It's on norwegian, don't know how to make it english tbh. Changed some to english tho.

Ethernet-Adapter Local Network:

Tilkoblingsspesifikt DNS-suffiks :
Description : Intel(R) 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection
Fysisk Adresse : 00-25-B3-BF-37-F7
DHCP activated : Yes
Automatic konfigurasjon activated : Yes
Automatic IPv4-adressekonfig. :169.254.210.8(Foretrukket/Preferred)
Sub-mask : 255.255.0.0
Standard gateway :
NetBIOS over Tcpip : Activated

Edit: I've tried wireless but it won't work, I have also tried to repair and cut the power for minutes and hours. I have tried with and without router(D-Link). No good results. It worked with ethernet cable the first day I got it then it didn't want me to acces internet after I turned it off and on for first time.

Read what ronpaul said in his post, the laptop is not being assigned an IP address. Try setting a static IP address.

That.

So, go to Start > Control Panel > Networking and Sharing Center and on the left click Manage network connections.

Right click the Local Area Connection and hit Properties, then, you should see a list of Protocols with checkboxes next to them. Find the one for "Internet Protocol version 4 and double click it. Then, you should enter in an IP address and mask/gateway consistent with your router, and I'm pretty sure a D-link can use the following settings:

IP address: 192.168.1.21
Subnet mask: 255.255.225.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Use the Following DNS server addresses:
192.168.1.1

You don't need a second one.

Click OK to save all those changes, and then try the "ping" command I gave you in the first post. If ping works, try browsing the internet. If that works, hurray.

If not, can you ping? If you can't, you may have the wrong gateway address. If you can maybe it's time to open up the router and check some settings.

What happens?

I didn't do anything after I last posted and suddenly it worked, just out of nowhere. I'll do the following step if it happens again. thanks.

Please close thread, as i got all info i need.
