oh. well im a desktop gamer, i used to be a laptop gamer but thats not upgradeable and its more expensive and not as good. :/

Yup, well if you find the right laptop Best Buy is fine. I personally dont buy much from Bestbuy since they are expensive but the retail laptops and such that you can buy from them are fairly good.
Nothing, i mean nothing beats these two laptops for the price though. The only one i can think of is the previous king of the budget gamers and that is the Gateway FX line but those specs dont match up to these new ones. It is still up there in the top 3 though and might be better than the 15.6" im going to link but im not sure on the benchmarks.

i thought the M17 did crossfire with dual mobile HD 3870's?
It does but the newer M17x has SLI Nvidia dual 280m.

Yea there is but if anything goes wrong with my laptop and I need it repaired it takes a 6 week period at best buy, the place I'm buying at is 72 hours.
I looked in the best buy canada site and couldn't find any Asus either

ahhh thats a shame. I guess you could go for the one you showed then.
As to the posts about the M17x. Yes the old M17 did crossfire 3870's but the new M17x which is an absolute monster and looks amazing does either single GTX 260m, SLI GTX 260m, or SLI GTX 280m. The thing is very pricey, best buy sells a very well configured one at $2,099. The configuration is cheaper on bestbuy than it would be on alienware.com
It comes with a quad core and SLI GTX 260m. Would get it if i needed it lol

Just to throw my .02 in here...
I'm just thinking of people I know who, going to college and wanting a good laptop, got the ultimate GPU models, and were constantly looking for electric outlets so they could charge their laptops. Constantly complaining about how annoying it was that they were having to monitor their usage, not having enough time to finish assignments before the laptop shuts down, things like that. Just something to think about when you buy a gaming laptop; even when you're not gaming, they still have a shorter battery life between charges than less powerful laptops.
That being said, I'd probably want the gaming laptop, too

I'm just thinking of people I know who, going to college and wanting a good laptop, got the ultimate GPU models, and were constantly looking for electric outlets so they could charge their laptops. Constantly complaining about how annoying it was that they were having to monitor their usage, not having enough time to finish assignments before the laptop shuts down, things like that. Just something to think about when you buy a gaming laptop; even when you're not gaming, they still have a shorter battery life between charges than less powerful laptops.
That being said, I'd probably want the gaming laptop, too

This laptop will get the job done. The graphics card in this laptop is equivalent to a desktop 9800GT. Screen is a good size I wouldn't go any bigger because of weight and heat output of the unit, also the battery life wouldn't be as good. Oh, I forgot to mention this laptop comes with a program so that you can overclock it. I also recommend a chill pad for playing games on a laptop.

I'm in law school, and on my second "school laptop". The first was a dell that had a decent graphics card for the time, and now I have a 13" MacBook Pro.
You should buy a small, light, long lasting battery laptop for school. If you want to use your laptop for school, you want to bring it to class. Books are heavy, you want a light laptop. "But Ryken, I won't be hauling it around!" Then save the money and get a desktop. The whole bit about not having room for it is crap. Everyone in college gets a desk, so everyone can have a desktop.
Buy a notebook that gets good battery life, and save some money for a desktop that can game. In fact, if I didn't already have my desktop, I would have gone for a 10-12" netbook for school. Light and portable, and able to take notes, and write papers. Perfect! Money saved for the desktop!
Buying the 17" gaming laptop is just sinking too much money into a machine that you won't want to carry around because it is so damn big. I carry my 13" macbook everyday and even that is starting to seem big.
If light gaming is a must, get a 13" with a video card in it.
A Dell Mini 12 refurbed can be had for $309. Load Office on it, and use it strictly for school, and sink the other $700 into a really decent gaming desktop.
Personal rant: I get to school at 9:00 every morning, and rarely leave before 5pm. I'm in class, the library, or taking a quick coffee/food break the whole day. My macbook makes it without having to charge. That alone is worth so much money, I can't even describe it to someone who doesn't lug around law school case books.

I think you are forgetting that those $2,500 Macbook Pro's are absolutely killer video and image editing machines. From raw performance, to an OS that works so nicely with those programs, to a display that is truly professional quality. The machines are built to be able to handle some pretty intense stuff, but not gaming specific tasks. Just because it doesn't game, doesn't mean it can only do web/email.
That being said, I don't want to hijack this thread into another mac/pc debate. They both have things that are absolutely splendid, and things that will drive you absolutely crazy. The real question is what is good for this young lad off to the land of college.
